So with my allergies getting worse, the Acid reflux and the potential asthma they say i might have... i think it's really time to throw out the smokes. I'm having a really hard time quitting though. I'm such an anxious person... and i'm still not eating solid foods cause of the swallowing issues.. so i can't really replace smoking with eating. Can anyone suggest a way to help me quit!!!! i know it's the only way my breathing is gonna feel at least a little better right now with the help of the allergy meds and stuff too!!! i don't really feel ready to quit but i know i have no choice!!! TIA

I used Ziban and I would definitely recommend it.

I used chantix, I DON'T recommend it. Zyban is supposed to work well without the suicidal/depressive side effects. Otherwise I'd just use the patch.

Within ...
20 minutes- Your blood pressure, pulse rate, and the temperature of your hands and feet will all return to normal.
12 hours- Your blood oxygen level will have increased to normal and carbon monoxide levels will have dropped to normal.
48 hours- Damaged nerve endings have started to regrow and your sense of smell and taste are beginning to return to normal.
72 hours- Your entire body will test 100% nicotine-free and over 90% of all nicotine metabolites will now have passed from your body via your urine. You can also expect the symptoms of chemical withdrawal to have peaked in intensity. Your bronchial tubes are beginning to relax thus making it easier to breathe. Your lung capacity has also started to increase.
10 days to 2 weeks- Your body has physically adjusted to again functioning without nicotine and the more than 3,500 chemical particles and 500 gases present in each and every puff.
2 weeks to 3 months- Your heart attack risk has started to drop. Your lung function is beginning to improve.
3 weeks to 3 months- Your circulation has substantially improved. Walking has become easier. Your chronic cough, if any, has likely disappeared.
1 to 9 months- Any smoking related sinus congestion, fatigue or shortness of breath have decreased. Cilia have regrown in your lungs thereby increasing their ability to handle mucus, keep your lungs clean, and reduce infections. Your body's overall energy has increased.
1 year- Your excess risk of coronary heart disease has dropped to less than half that of a smoker.
5 to 15 years - Your risk of stroke has declined to that of a non-smoker.
10 years- Your risk of death from lung cancer has declined by almost half if you were an average smoker (one pack per day). Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus has now decreased.
15 years- Your risk of coronary heart disease is now that of a person who has never smoked.

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
are you on medication? if so then talk to your doc first if you do plan on taking pills to help you quit.
Ive heard some negative things about welbutrin and chantix. It has bad side effects such as depression.
Theres also laser theraphy which people say works and being hynotized although that scares me to think of.
Maybe try the patches or theres a hotline or site you can go to that they can help you to quit.
Good luck.

i've heard the same thing about both of those. So it makes me a little weary. I'm on a ton of meds right now for allergies, and my stomache. So i'd really hate to add on to it...but at this point i guess i'm just desperate to quit!!! i could always try the patch... DH seems to think i can do it cold turkey...but i'm not that confident in myself..lol. Besides he has to quit too.. so we'll see!!!

yeah some people have bad side effects while others dont have a problem at all with it so all depends. I know my luck and i would have bad side effects, happened to me a few times in the past with other stuff.
I am really curious what the laser theraphy is about. I want to look into that.

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
Okay the way I quit smoking was so dumb but it worked for me. I have never heard anyone else use this way so I wanted to put it out there in case it could help you!
Every day I had a set time that I could start smoking. The most important part of this method is to pay attention to the number of cigarettes you are smoking and making sure its always decreasing, never increasing or staying the same.
So, for three days I couldnt have a cigarette until after 9AM. And then I would push it back and hour. After a while I could only have ONE cigarette ALL day and it had to be right before bedtime. So, after a few days I would 'forget' that last cigarette.
Another plus is that the less cigarettes I smoked, the staler my packs would get and I wouldnt even enjoy the cigarette!
Now, I have not smoked in three years and I have passed the ultimate test. . .I can smoke a cigarette if I am out drinking and not want one the next day. Actually, most of the time I wake up and hate that I smell like smoke! My DH smokes a pack a day and I have not had a single cigarette since our honeymoon!
good luck
ETA: I wanted to add that this worked for me bc I could always think that I could have one 'later' and it gave me something to look forward to.

I know i can't do it cold turkey..but less and less each day is a good idea!! it's hard right now since i'm not working... when i work i smoke less cause i can't smoke as often as i'd like to.. but being home and bored really makes it hard..but it's def. worth a try!!!!!!!!!! congrats again!!!!

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
I quite cold turkey after I had my first asthma attack and thought it was a heart attack. I smoked for 10 yrs/2 packs a day. I have stopped for 14 yrs now. I hate the smell now. I suggested to a coworker to take the money, in his case $40 paycheck, and put it in a separate account or place as a vacation fund. Think of a place you most would love to go. Then take the money and put it in there instead of buying the cigarettes. I bet in a year you will be able to go to a place you have always dreamed of, esp if you are buying like 2 packs a day. Everytime you want a butt, think of going there and make that your goal. Have your DH do the same. He can't smoke around you though, because you won't be able to refrain from smoking, at least in the beginning. Since you can't eat, maybe lollipops and gums. I also did the time thing the other girl was saying to. I think it helps you cut down, but it didn't help me totally quit. Keep your hands busy too, maybe knit or draw, since you can't snack on things, like pistachios (which helped me). Good luck and you will see your health improve. Dream big.

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
I quit also recently due to asmtha . It is even more of a health issue for us, our chances of getting cancer ect is even higher since our lungs are more sensitive. Just to tell you how bad I was, I would go on my nebulizer and then smoke like a complete dumb as*. It was not easy, but I made up my mind that I had enough, cold turkey, and lots of gum. I was a half a pack a day, but I used to be a pack a day from 15- 30 . When you get to the point I am , you realize how disgusting smoking really is ( no offense to those who smoke) and you will save so much money !
good luck, you CAN do it!

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
thank you ladies. I know it's gonna be hard.. and i as well have taken my pump and then lit a cigarette... that's how much the addiction takes hold of you i guess. I am trying my best for now to at least cut back..and maybe i can work up the strength to cut it out totally without any help from a pill or a patch. It's very inspiring to hear stories from everyone..makes me feel more like i can do it!!!!!!

Re: Help me quit smoking!!!
I have been addicted to nicorette for about 5 years. I really am a non smoker, but now I have to get off these damn lozenges. The funniest thing is that I HATE gum chewing, but became addicted to nicorette to quit. then I discovered the lozenges. I have to get off them -- its better than smoking, but i still have the nicoteene addiction. DH and I want to start trying to get pregnant in February, so now I don't know how I'm going to get off the damn lozenges! Maybe I'll try tilde's method -- sounds smart!

im trying to quit right now too...and I know how hard it is! I've been smoking for almost 15 years! Cold turkey has never worked for me, so i've been cutting back drastically every day... i went from 1 pack a day to 10 a day to 7 a day to 5 and now i'm down to 4.... it's tough but worth it! Good Luck!!!!

ACUPUNCTURE!!!
I did it 4 years ago and it worked. I tried so manyyy times and ways to quit. I smoked a pack a day for almost 10 years. Nothing I did worked. I did that and it just made it so much easier on me. It worked for 2 of my gf's too!!
I most def recommend it. I have had a cigarette here and there since but have never ever felt like I had to have a cigarette ever again!!!
