Here is a really funny LIW/LIF Story....

Original post by KittyGags

Well Ron and Liz, heres what is probably a first for you guys...but your board has found me a relative! It turns out IrishBrideASmiling and I are actually COUSINS! LOL

She FM'ed me a few days ago and now that we've pieced it all together, her Grandpa and my Grandma were brother and sister! We think that makes us third cousins but we're not really sure!

Oh and we live around 5 minutes away from each other! HAHAHAHAH

So not only did you help us plan our weddings but you helped us find family! Woo hoo!

And hi to my new cousin!

That is so awesome!!! And yes, that does make you third cousins...I'm quickly becoming an expert in extended family relations!

Sorry to crash..

I think it makes you second cousins. Your grandparents were brother/sister so your parents were first cousins...which makes you two second cousins.

I think My dad is way into geaniology so I've had the relations drilled into me pretty hard haha

I *think* the second cousin would be their parent's cousins, making them, the children, the third...at least that's how I've been told. In DH's family, his mother's cousins are called his second cousins and his mother's cousins' children are called his third cousins...maybe I'm mistaken, but that's how I thought it went Either way, still really cool to find a long lost cousin here.

See thats what I thought too but wouldn't her father be my 2nd cousin and vice versa...and then shed be my third?

I could be wrong though?

If you are third cousins, then her parents are your second cousins once removed...gives me a headache haha

Re: Here is a really funny LIW/LIF Story....

I looked it up on Wikipedia..

a person with whom you share a grandparent (but not a parent) is a first cousin; someone with whom you share a great-grandparent (but not a grandparent) is a second cousin; and someone with whom you share a great-great-grandparent (but not a great-grandparent) is a third cousin; and so on. The child of your first cousin is your first cousin once removed because the one generation separating you and the child (the cousin) represents one remove. You and the child are still considered first cousins, as your own grandparent (this child's great-grandparent), as the most recent common ancestor, represents one degree.

I looked elsewhere for confirmation and they pretty much said the same thing.

If your grandparents are siblings they you share a great grandparent, which makes you second cousins. Your parents would be first cousins. Her parent would be your first cousin once removed.

Woo! Moving up in the cousin world!

To answer the question as to how it was figured out....she FM'ed me to ask if I was related to X and X and I was (it was my aunt and uncle). She was talking to her aunt about my aunt's (they're cousins by marriage) niece that was supposed to get married at THAT hotel in LB and ended up at the Carltun!

She thought it sounded familiar and it did because it was me! The response back was classic though...

'So ummmmm I think we might be related!' lolol

That is really awesome! DH had found out 2 years ago about a cousin he had in Germany...it was a son of his Uncle Eric who died when he was in his 20's in a terrible car accident in Germany. This cousin of his had been looking for family relations for 20+years & had stumbled upon DH's father's name - sent him an email by chance & sure enough it was DH's father's brother's son. So it was sooooooooooo nice - the cousin & his wife flew from Germany to US for our wedding & we got to meet them for very 1st time...wow so emotional!

Very happy for you guys!
