Holidays...

Holidays...

So how is everyone splitting them up? Im trying to convince DH that we should do both houses for thanksgiving since our parents live in the same town, like 5 minutes from each other.

And for christmas, my family for eve, and his for the x-mas day.

And easter, again both if they are still in the same town...

I feel like it keeps the peace and everyone is happy. Besides, we don't have kids, so its not like we have to move our kids from house to house.

How is everyone splitting the holidays?

What made you choose eve his parents and day yours?
DH doesn't understand that my family does not celebrate day, we do it all on the eve. We are all up late opening our gifts and celebrating. His family, does dinner and are in bed early, they open their gifts day morning..

Re: Holidays...

well i really wanted to host thanksgiving which would've been the best option since we can spend it with both families at the same time and not travel. Don't think this is going to happen though. We are moving around first week of December so might not be able to. But we usually do thanksgiving at my house, his parents go upstate to his aunts house. In the past this was what we did bc one we didn't have to travel far plus I used to work the day after thanksgiving so this was the best option for us. But DH mentioned last week about spending thanksgiving with his family so we'll see.

Christmas-usually thanksgiving eve we go to church with his family, then go out to a restaurant to eat and then back to his house to open gifts at midnight. Christmas day was spent with my family. However, I think i will be able to host christmas dinner, so I would like to do this christmas day and spend it all together

I HATE HATE HATE travelling for the holidays and rarely have. It was always done at my house for the most part

I hate traveling too, luckily our families lives 3 miles from us. His aunt is out east and we have no desire to go there, and my aunt is in queen about 20 minutes which isnt bad. and my brother lives in Conn, but he comes down here..
I would LOVE to host at least 2 holiday but its hard, cause we cant leave out aunts and cousins out but if we dont with just 2 aunts we have 28 people!

Well for me, the reason we picked christmas eve with his family and christmas day with my family just made the most sense. Both of our families do celebrate christmas eve so it was hard at first but the thing is that his family always goes to church on christmas eve, his mother is in the choir and they all get together on christmas eve. Since it means alot to his mom that we all go to church on christmas eve and its the day they all get together then it made more sense. With my family, we celebrate christmas eve but we also do christmas day. Christmas eve is more like cocktails, appetizers, some main entrees and opening gifts at midnight but we also do a big christmas day dinner and most people come over on christmas day. This way we were able to celebrate with more people on these days

Thanksgiving - I have no clue. We are arguing about this. His family is way out east and my family is here in Nassau near us.
We might go see his family during the day on Thanksgiving. Who knows.
All I know is that at 9pm im headed out to Tanger!!

Hanukkah - one night at moms and one night at his family

I'm pretty fortunate and don't have this issue. We do everything with my family! His parents are both deceased and his siblings don't live near us.

DH's family really isnt big on any holiday except Christmas Eve, so we split the time with the families on that day only. Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter are all with my family and DH's immediate family usualy comes for one or two of those.

We are exactly the same...last year we did his family for thanksgiving dinner and dessert with my family...this year we will switch it around.

Christmas Eve we do at his families because they open gifts at midnight and Christmas day at my parents house.

Easter not sure my Easter is different because I am Greek so we are lucky with that one.

we get real lucky with easter too. Since i am christian orthodox(same religion as greeks) and dh is catholic, we dont celebrate it on the same day. Although once in a while it does land on the same day but just once every few years so its ok

Re: Holidays...

Thanksgiving- usually we host it but this year my MIL is and she invited my sisters, their signifigant others and my mother. Christmas is my family (DH and I will host it) and Hannukah is DH's family. Easter- my sister will host it and Passover, my MIL's house.
Having different religious backgrounds makes it a little easier I think...not too many conflicts since they always land on different days. My sister is always conflicted with her FH though...it's so hard to figure out the schedule w/2 families!!!!
