The home we bought had a system in place so I dont know what the system itself cost. We pay about $30.00 per month for fire and break in monitoring.

Fran, what system are you using for the monitoring? We have a system in place already, but we need to activate it. We've gotten a bazillion solicitations for it, but I'd like to know how you chose your company. Thanks!

We used the same company the former owner used. We spoke to a few other companies, some had a better deal on monidtoring but they all wanted to sell us a new system in addition to the monitoring service.

We use Sentry Security... I really like them. ADT is really not that good.. abd they are not that bright when it comes to customer service. JMO

I have spoken with AlarmTech in Hauppauge. It is $21 per month for monitoring paid quarterly, $19 per month is paid yearly.

My best friend's husband worked at an alarm company for many, many years- he told me to stay away from the wireless stuff. I will tell you that with our wireless modem, we couldn't have a 2.4 megahertz phone because it was competiting for the same signal.

That's true b/c we sometimes have issues w/our cordless phone, and the wireless modem. Often times, DH will come running down the stairs when I am on the phone and ask me to move to a different part of the house to talk b/c for some reason the place I am standing or sitting is interfering with his computer access.

BTW...in answer to the question - we use Slomins. Thank god we haven't any problems - I think we pay about $35 a month that's with a maintenance plan. My DH had ADT prior to us getting married - he liked it too...is was about the same price as Slomins but without the maintenance.

Be carefull with the wireless modems. News 12 had a series on how easy it is for someone with simple technology to drive near the house and pick up your signal. There is an easy way to protect against that, but you have to 'turn on the switch' on your computer. They showed how someone with an antenna made from a PRINGLES can could intercept your signal. The scary part was that it gave them access to the shared files on your hard drive and they could also take your IP address, commit fraudulent acts using your IP address, and if it was ever traced it would all point to YOU!
If you have Cablevision IO, you can go to News 12 interactive and see the story - it's 2 parts - part 2 tells you how to protect yourself. It was a matter of activating something in the softwear - I don't recall what is was though
