Where can I get the best info. on Sunday Open Houses? I know Newsday is a good source, but does anyone have any other suggestions?
How is everyone doing in their searches? We still haven't pinpointed an area that we want to live in - which is driving me crazy!
Thanks!!
:)

Kathi, I'm going through the same thing...
I was married this past June and have been looking for a house since - (I know it's really not that long) but I'm at the point I really would like to find something.
We have looked at a lot of different areas (and that just makes it more confusing) It is very hard picking a place to live... We have looked in Massapequa, Wantagh,Merrick - I think I have ruled these out - only for the reason of not having a huge selection of the style of homes we like. Now I'm looking at Rockville Center (which is really where we want to live) but can't afford - so now we are looking in Floral Park - we like it but don't know much about the area. Anyway, I know what you are going through - every house we look at - we go home and consider - but we never feel it is worth what they are asking. This is a tough time to buy a home. Good Luck Kathi - keep me posted. Have you looked at all - if so, where?

Check out these 2 websites
www.mlsli.com
www.realtor.com
They can at least give you some ideas as the what is out there. I have a friend who just bought a home in Merrick after alot of looking and she said both these websites keep listings that are very current, not outdated like some. Good luck all. We still have no idea if we are going North or East of where we currently live.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I have those 2 sites in my favorites and I check them every day!

We haven't really looked yet - just a little bit in the spring and then we stopped to plan the wedding and I was finishing school.
Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and/or Massapequa is where we think we want to be. I'm going to go to a few open houses this Sunday w/ my mom (hubby has to work!)...
Tell me about it being a tough time to buy... I'm a real estate broker in Manhattan and need to make a living so I can afford a house! :)
I'll definitely keep you posted!
Good luck!

Lynbrook, New Hyde Park?
Anyone look in or live in thee areas? We re thinking about checking them out. The commute into NYC is decent and school systems seem good if you are in the right district.

I live in Lynbrook and I love the area. School Distict #20 is very good. It's very convenient to NYC-it takes my FI 35 minutes each day. We are a 5 minute walk to Lynbrook station and 2 minute walk to Center Ave Station in East Rockaway. We live in an appt now, but will start to look for a house after our July 2002 wedding. Hope this helps.

Western Suffolk....
I got the job offer and plan to accept it, so I'll be working in Bayport - south shore / western Suffolk area. We've started looking anywhere from that area, up towards Port Jeff and west towards Smithtown and Hauppauge. We don't know where Hubby will be working yet, so it makes it hard to find a place that's convenient to both of us. We're looking this weekend at some places around E. Islip, Sayville, etc. and maybe Lake Grove too.
I noticed that the open houses in Newsday tend to be in the higher price ranges. I'm hoping we'll find some in our range this weekend.
Oh - by the way, I start November 12th and the best part is they are offering me the corporate apartment for 90 days (negotiable for longer if needed) while we find and close on a house. Under the circumstances, we won't have the luxury of being real picky looking for our dream house, but it sure makes it easier to relocate.

Congratulations, Karen!! That's great news!!
Good luck on the search for your home. We've thought the Islip area but it seems unrealistic. I work in Manhattan and my husband works in Brooklyn!
I plan to quit my job (and find another on LI) when we move - I just don't want to commute 1 1/2 hours each way when we start our family!
Keep us posted!

Karen-Three Village Area
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing the whole process with us from the layoff...to the new job, it`s nice to hear how other people get through stuff. Have you considered East Setauket? It is part of the Three Village Area-since you mentioned Port Jefferson, it is right there. My ex-boyfriend had a house there and it was a beautiful area. Just another place to consider for your list. Best wishes!

Elizabeth...
Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked on Realtor.com, but have not driven through the area. I'll have to check it out. I prefer north shore, although hubby likes south shore since thats where his friends and family are. I may opt for south just because it's closer to my new job too. The main goal is a great house as soon as possible, so I'm not going to restrict the drive time too much.

I can vouch that Three Village is nice. That's where I grew up. Great schools too.

Kathi - we have the same arrangement
I work in Manhattan and Steve works in Brooklyn. With our budget..lol we figure we need to look in Suffolk County.

LOL Michelle!!
Does your Steve drive to work? Mine works for MTA, but God forbid he takes a bus or train!! HEHE
Anyway, I`m definitely going to leave my job in Manhattan when we find our house - or start our family. I just can`t commute an hour or more. I HATE the idea of it!!
Good luck on your search. Before we were married we said we`d hope to find something within our first year...that idea lasted as long as the honeymoon! We`re not even at the 1-month mark and we`re ready to start packing!!

My Steve is a fireman so he drives to work. I work in Midtown and work in a corporate real estate department.
I have no desire to spend an hour on the train commuting into the city either, plus I already had an 8 year old and don't want o be that far away in case there is eer an emergency.
Our goal is to 'TRY' to find an affordable home in Suffolk County that has a good school district, have another baby :-), and me work around his schedule, preferably on LI
HMM wonder if we can pull this off
LOL

WE can pull it off and we will!! LOL. I just need to be patient - not one of my strongest traits!! It could also be that I'm not getting any younger!! :)
We'll start looking at Suffolk this weekend...
Good luck and keep in touch!!
