Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
I myself don't take the LIRR, but Mark does. We live in Merrick and I think he said it's 45 mins to 1 hr.

I do and have since I graduated college. I come from Floral Park which is about a 35 minute train ride to Penn.
I don't mind it. I read or just sleep a little. Somethimes the service gets messed up and that is annoying otherwise it isn't that bad

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
The LIRR $ucks! Plain and simple. You pay hundreds of dollars per month for the priviledge of 'unavoidable' delays, no seats, late trains, dirty trains. Sometimes if you are super lucky, you get one of their 2 new trains and then you feel like you are not cattle. But normally you have to sit in the in-between seat between 2 guys, 1 of which thinks eating pizza is a good idea on a packed train and the other snores. My other favorite part of the LIRR is when you get on and try to look for a seat but people confuse seats as briefcase storage. So you have to ASK someone to please move their stuff so you can also sit. Another real fun thing is when the subway is slow, slow, slow and you miss your train by 2 minutes. The feeling is undescribable. Now, you wait 30+ minutes for the next one. And you get all of this for the low, low price of $100+ per month, and now 25% increase!!

but its going to add 15 min to your commute just to drive to Merrick! I know there is an express wantagh, bellmore, merrick I used to take it I think your better off driving to wantagh and you know what..... its probably the same train :) and the people in wantagh get seats

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
michele - i am sooo not looking forward to it! but at the same time, i have to weigh it out and compare it to taking nyc trains and they for sure aren't fun either! how about when someone decides they are going to squeeze themselves into a space that isn't evenmeant for a child.... uughgghh. will have to start looking for something that i can drive to.... when this market picks up that is! there is NADA out there!

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
I used to commute from Merrick. On the way there it was about 45-50 minutes and on the way home I took an Express and it was 40 minutes. Not that bad. Now that I am living in NJ it's about 35 minutes there and 25 minutes on an Express home!

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
I find the commute not too terrible. You'll be traveling the Babylon branch, which is one of the better ones on the whole system. By saying better I mean that the trains are usually on time, and you can usually find a seat.
I usually just sleep in the morning and I read at night. Yes we all feel like cattle, but I don't think there's any way to avoid that with any mass transit system.

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
I worked in the city for 7 years before getting my job on LI. I hated it!! I commuted from the Long Beach line (from East Rockaway), the Babylon line (from RVC) and from the Huntington/Pt. Jeff line (Syosset).
The thing I hated about it was the time it took. I guess I just felt there was better things to do with my time than commute.

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
I just started commuting from Wantagh. The weather this winter has really played havoc on the Babylon line. I would rather sit on a train than be stuck in traffic so I deal with it.

Re: how bad is the commute to nyc?
Personally, I hate taking the LIRR to work in the morning and coming home at night. DH was born and raise in East Meadow, LI and took it to work for 2 years until we live together in Queens a few months before our wedding. DH also hates the LIRR. Note, effective in June 2003 prices will increase on all fares with the MTA--subway, buses, tolls, bridges, EZ-Pass, LIRR, Metro North, etc., etc.. Service stinks, fares are too expensive, filthy trains, etc. etc. I could go on and on...
However, the East Meadow community is very nice as sometimes you got to sacrifice something for the better. Just personally, I hate the LIRR. Good luck.
