How divorce can harm your credit...

I saw this article this morning and immediately thought of our friend, Sharon (Shamee), who is going through a difficult time right now.
But, this is good information for all us, regardless.
How an Ex- Can Ruin Your Credit

Re: How divorce can harm your credit...

Oh this article is so true. My ex so badly destroyed my credit that I pretty much had to start over from scratch. The only credit card I was able to obtain was a secured card with a $250 limit . Things are fine now (9 years later), but it took me years and years to get back my good credit. This is why this time around I have my cards and DH has his. I have my bank account and DH has his. We also have a joint account for household bills, but I pay my own car payment and my own credit cards and have my own excellent credit. DH's is excellent too, but I learned the hard way so I want to protect myself.

Re: How divorce can harm your credit...

Thanks Claud...

I've already taken alot of steps this article indicated. I work a night job at a company that does credit checks, so it was real easy to find out what was open jointly or not (although nothing really was). So far things have been amicable, but we haven't gotten into the nitty gritty of things. The house is not up for sale yet because there are several loose ends we need to tie up before we take that step. I haven't formally served him yet but I'm getting my ducks in a row for the big event. He is still hoping to work things out and that is only a possibility if he seeks medical treatment for his multiple issues. I haven't heard of any doctors appointments as of yet, so you can see how 'committed' he is to working on our issues. Just some more lip service, if you ask me. Believe me, I've got one foot out the door and no river of tears he sheds is going to change that. The other night, he was home and I got off work early - I wasn't going to hang around so I quickly got dressed and headed to the Village Pub for some live entertainment. He put on the tears and said 'You'll do anything to not spend a second around me. Am I that unbearable to be around?'. Yup!! Get used to it buddy.

Very interesting article - I never knew that closing credit card accounts could lower your FICO score - that just does not make sense to me!

Re: How divorce can harm your credit...

I have 3 credit cards, 2 with zero balance and 1 with a balance and here I was thinking that what I did by closing them would help make me look great, what the helll I guess they want to see you have a million cards and how you can manage them. That is too tempting tho' some people have not self control Closing is the best way for them to go
