How do you deal with unemployment?

How do you deal with unemployment?

So we are going on week 4 of DH being out of work and i have been ok so far but today I lost it in the car ride to work. Just seeing him not working and knowing how terrible he feels about it is making me sad. He emailed me that he feels bad that I am pregnant and having to work and he should be working making the money. I told him we are going to be fine and it will all work out, but I am scared to death! I also don't want him to start to get down about it and I am trying to keep his spirits up. I know we aren't the only ones out there going through this...but for those of you on here who are, how are you dealing, coping, handling your current situation?

TIA....

I am so sorry :( That is definitely not fun and I feel your pain. I am not going through this but can offer advice to keep a positive outlook. I know its hard but that it what you have to do for now. He is in the union right? Dont things pick up when it gets warmer? Spring is around the corner!

Also can he do any pick up work that is non-union or no?

what field was your husband in? Maybe he can take a job not in his field just for now to bring in some extra $$. It'll also help his self-esteem if he's not idle, KWIM? It will all work out, try not to stress yourself out, you have to keep your nerves down for the peanut.

Thanks guys I know we aren't alone in this situation but it just really *****! He is in Local 7 Marble Union, he is a marble finisher. I think he is going to start considering taking a non union job until something comes through. His union rep said that it's just slow out there right now in his union there are 300 guys out.

Honey - I feel you. At first I was really calm, and then I broke down - and every once in a while, I still do. I've been out since Jan 7 and I haven't even gotten a call back from anything I've sent. I'm picking up the search this week and am going to start to sending each resume I sent via mail in addition to email. We're all thinking of you!

I was thinking about you too, wondering if you've found anything. I will keep you in my job prayers as well! What position are you applying for again? Just incase I hear of anything. Our firm is hiring a marketing/receptionist but I don't think that is your field.

I'm really sorry Mi@. I can relate. I havent lost my job but the housing market is so poor that my income has gone down dramatically. So i know how your DH is feeling too. Its hard to not contribute as much as you want too. I think its awesome that you are doing everything you can to keep his spirits up and i hope the spring brings new opportunities for all of us. Hang in there and if you need to talk i'm here

its really tough, ive been out of work for about a month now, and i was realllly down last week, i feel bad for DH everything is on his shoulders and i feel like i can't help, thats probably how your DH feels, and you feel bad cause your scared and can't help him but together you will figure something out! the world is very hard right now, just do what you can and continue to love and support each other and everything will be fine!

It's not easy...I was the one out of work for about two months. Just continue to be supportive. While I was unemployed DH was so supportive of me and just heard me out and let me know that things would work out in the end.

What he is feeling is natural. I felt the same way everyday that DH went to work and I didn't.

There are a ton of marble and granite places in farmingdale, we just got some marble installed last weekend.

I have a question does your DH polish marble already installed?

My situation is, we had some marble installed in our foyer and it gets really scratched up from people walking on it. Does he know how to get the scratches out?

Also i have a marble bathroom and my cleaning people left a metal toilet bowl cleaner on it, and it rusted the marble, and we have a big round rust stain, would he know if its possible for this to come out?

TIA

Re: How do you deal with unemployment?

I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty miserable. I've been out of work for 2 months now and my industry has NOTHING... it's falling apart. You feel like each day melts into the next and you dont have a purpose. One thing that has helped me tremendously is running and yoga. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and something to do each day.

Thankfully, I've been on 2 interviews through people I know and things are looking positive. Hang in there, it will get better eventually. It's hard not to breakdown every now and then but I really believe that everything happens for a reason.

I was in PR and I'm looking for anything communications related, and I am looking into admin positions that pay well (some pay very little, some pay close to what I was making, and some pay A LOT). Please FM me about the position your firm is hiring for!!!

Jenn, not sure if you saw my post from last week, but a few people quit from my company and they're hiring. One that I know they're still looking is a Conference Producer. I came from the PR world as well and fit right in. Let me know if you want me to submit your resume.

Re: How do you deal with unemployment?

Just stay positive!!!! things will work themselves out. its just hard and annoying to wait and not know.

i lost my job right before the wedding (nov) and my dh just lost his a month ago. so until i took a temp mkt job i was out of work for like 3 months.

i just started working full time today and he's going to start on monday.

what worked for us to find new jobs....for me...i looked for jobs in all diff outlets...company sites, various online job postings etc. and applied all over. the interviews were limited but people do call...u just have to keep on sending stuff out. i ended up finding my job on craigslist...not in the same industry (which is totally fine by me) but still mkt.

my dh got a bunch of interviews & offers through his contacts/networks and just called places directly (regardless if they had any openings listed)...and the job he ended up taking was actually because the company called to recruit him.

and if u could help search online for him and just ask everyone u know it would help too

Re: How do you deal with unemployment?

I hope things get better. Is it something he can market himself to do indiv jobs, like even handyman work? He can post on Craigslist. Spring is coming, maybe landscaping work, just to get by until the market picks up. Not sure if it pays more than the unemployment or not but maybe a different field will help right now. My ex use to tease me about my c r a p p y paying job but right now I am very thankful to have it. I am glad that the govt is looking to help with Cobra also for those unemployed. We are looking at pay cuts/decreases or layoffs as well. We are union backed and I am tenured, but my job could be lost in a heartbeat if the cuts aren't approved by the union, cuts on top of low pay x2 since DH works with me. Things will get better. Stress is no good for you but esp the baby. It will all work out in the end.

State of the union address jobs right now
