a decent amount of money in a savings account? How often do you put money into it?

Re: How many of you have...
My ING account is my savings account/house fund.
I get paid twice a week. The first check pays off all of my bills and I take out a little spending money for the rest of the month. My second check goes into my savings.
I don't pay rent or have a mortgage so that is why I am able to do that so soon it will be diminished greatly!

Re: How many of you have...
after the wedding, we opened a money market account to put our wedding gifts into ... because the interest rate is higher than a regular savings account.
now that we are saving aggressively towards a house, we have figured out the difference between our rent & what we think we can afford for a mortgage + taxes. that difference goes into the money market once a month.
our tax refunds also went straight into that account as well.

Re: How many of you have...
everytime I try to keep it at a nice pace - something always seems to come up
But my Dh on the other hand - is a penny pincher and has accounts if we were in trouble or for investments.

Re: How many of you have...
We try but with the work that we've done to our house, it's been hard but we do have an ING account that has a bit in it but nothing at ALL where it should be (but we did just finish our basement)
i'm not gonna lie it's hard to save when you have mortgage to pay, a life to live and a house to still fix up (the outside at least). Not fun BUT i always have to remind myself that everyone our age is in the same boat and we'll come afloat at some point.
ETA: We put money into it every month.

Re: How many of you have...
I have a decent amount in an old 401K, and I have 2 pensions... We contribute to my son's college savings account on a monthly basis.. but as for SAVINGS... a big fat nothing.
I'm not making the $ I made before I had my son.. We're just getting by right now.

Re: How many of you have...
We have an ING savings account that automatically takes $100 from our checking account every week. It doesn't seem like a lot, but we don't even notice it coming out and after a few months, it really builds up! We started doing that last year as a 'honeymoon fund' and we saved up almost $5k in 9 months!! We also put all of our wedding gifts in there, and a CD I just cashed in. It's gone down a lot though, since we just bought a new bedroom set, a china cabinet and an elliptical machine! All good investments that would not be possible w/o wedding money!!

We have a nice amoutn of savings, but it was lowered significantly last month for the down payment (small as it was) for our house. we close in a week and it will be just about gone.

Re: How many of you have...
we used to until DH got laid off ...mixed with paying for the wedding & him still not having a job after a year has pretty much destroyed our savings...but i am hopeful we'll save again once he starts working.

Re: How many of you have...
we had a lot in there for the wedding but went down to $0. we got less back than what we expected from wedding gifts otherwise we were going to put half in there. now we can only put literally $100 in there a month...after our finances get better next month, we'll be able to put a little more.

Re: How many of you have...
we have a savings account but i wouldn't say we have a ton of money in it... enough to get by for a few months if one of us lost our jobs but thats it. And whatever tax money we got from our house, we pretty much have it spent already for random things, windows, kitchen floor, oil burner... all that fun stuff lol. As said above it is very hard to save when you have a mortgage and work to do on your house and to have somewhat of a life etc. Hopefully as the years go by it will get easier to save.

DITTO!! I just made our 2nd mortgage payment and I'm looking at my account like- Man, I used to have a lot more money left after paying bills!! Our saving went down significantly after the house but we still have some.
We also have a seperate ING account. DH gets bonuses quarterly and those go right into savings. In between that - if we can contribute, we do.

Ditto. Every penny seems to go to our house in some way. Our savings is so small. DH doesn't have a set income so some months are better than others, when we can we save. Somedays I love having a house and others I hate it. I just did the bills last night so today I hate it !!!

Re: How many of you have...
right after we bought our house we put a decent amount of $ into a saving and we are slowly building on it. every month we put $200 direct deposit. It has been very hard to save with a new house!! but atleast it's something!

Re: How many of you have...
we have all our wedding money and we're transferring a bunch of it into a 1 year CD (interest rates are pretty low right now) and in the meantime we're each saving a set amount every month - I have mine automatically transferred the day i get paid so i don't really feel it missing. I have a ton in my 401k because i've been working for like 11 years, and my own savings account that I've had forever which will be a backup for when we're ready to buy a house. DH didn't want us to combine all our money, and I agree.
