How would you feel if....

How would you feel if....

your husband was afraid of flying? My friend is going through this now and they already cancelled three trips. Twice, they were on the plane and got off right before takeoff. They have yet to go on their honeymoon and its been almost a year. He was never afraid of flying before but I would say since 9/11.

I feel so bad for her...I don't know what I would do if I couldn't go away with my husband ever.

Re: How would you feel if....

I was so afraid of heights and flying...but Im much better.
My sister's hubby is that way. He will NOT fly or go on a baot. She was stuck on where they could go on their HM. They went to the Poconos and had a great time, but I know she is really missing out on a lot. But she is learning to accept it.

I'm pretty sure they have cruises that leave out of NYC. they could do that. He could try therapy

I'm living this!!! My husband almost made me cancel our honeymoon because it was 6 weeks after 9/11!!! And then the day before we left, they started the bombing over there, so he REALLY didn't want to go!! Needless to say, after much threatening on my part, he got on the plane, but hasn't been on one since, and won't get on another one ever again!

Meanwhile, I was always going on vacations before I met him!! I desperately wanted to go to Vegas for our first anniversary, but he won't get on the plane! Our trips now have become the 'family' trips that I hated growing up, the DRIVING excursions!!!!

I married my father!

I think getting a prescription for some kind of sedative might help, like valuum or xanax. Or, maybe not as good of a solution, but how about having a few drinks before getting on the plane?

Wow..thanks for your sharing your stories ladies. I am a nervous flyer as well but I travel a lot for work and have started to feel a bit more comfortable on planes. Even before my job...I would force myself to travel. I would hate to miss out on visiting other beautiful places because of such a fear.

Their most recent trip was to vegas as well and she just cancelled it. She is so upset.

Have they tried hypnosis?

Not sure...but I doubt it. I'll ask her.

Re: How would you feel if....

My DH goes through this all the time with me. I've been afraid of flying even before 9/11 but it has gotten much much worse after. I flipped out the morning of our honeymoon and wanted to cancel..but went. Recently I was supposed to fly for work and cancelled. It's bad now.
I have a strong desire to get over this! It is so hard and frustrating to me.
We have a trip planned in May to go away and I'm anxious everyday thinking about it. But I am going - I have to.
My DH is very supportive - but it's not to the point that I refuse to go anywhere. I am at the point where I question if I'm going to go through with it or not.
Honestly I don't know how he would react if it became a solid NO.
Fear is a terrible thing - - I don't wish it on anyone.

Jatlantic...if you know of someone who does hypnosis for this I'd be interested!
I've looked but can not find one that treats fear of flying....

I was going to suggested Zanex too, Niha. My uncle takes a Zanex right before he has to get on a plane. And for those that enjoy an occasional cocktail, there's nothing wrong w/having a little cocktail in the airport lounge to help take the edge off - although, I don't recommend taking the Zanex w/the alcohol!

I used to travel (via airplane) for business at least once a month and it never even crossed my mind to be afraid. After 9/11, I can't say I've experienced the type of fear that some of the other ladies have described, but I do think twice now (especially when we have the baby with us). I find myself squeezing DH's hand alot more for comfort, but once I'm on the plane and take-off is complete, I am fine and I am able to resume my regular air travel routine.

That's how I am too. I hate takeoff but then I'm fine.

Steve is VERY leery of flying these days as well and totally opposed to the sedative and or alcohol solution. As he puts WHAT IF something happens I want to be alert. I can't win

My GF who I went to London with took something that calmed her down immensly, I think its something that the ladies stated above. Flying is very safe, but I think everyone has to have thier own comfort level. That is such a shame. I could not be with someone that does not like to fly, b/c I love to travel. My GF goes on all trips with other people or with her kids b/c her BF hates boats. trains and planes, he goes no where

Re: How would you feel if....

We cancelled our honeymoon the day before our wedding. My DH was so worried about the trip and we decided that it would be better to have him enjoy our wedding day than be worrying about the honeymoon. He is on medication but even on that didn't help with his fear. We ended up taking day trips to the Hampton's and NYC. It was nice. I still wish we could have gone to Florida. He promises me someday we will. We've been talking about trying to go this year.

Re: How would you feel if....

I did not even answer your question, I guess I would feel bad, b.c he would be left at home a lot. I love to travel. We would have to drug him up, b.c I would not like to go on the trips w/o him

Re: How would you feel if....

I would be upset b/c I love to travel...and being that my dad worked for American Airlines...growing up I was always on planes...they don't bother me at all...

but my mother...has not flown since the 80's...and still won't...they are going to take the QE2 to the Mediterranean this summer...a 27 day cruise!!

but my dad gets mad (b/c he has been around planes his whole life) and is upset my mom won't get on one...

my sister and I were thinking that we should buy them tickets to San Francisco (their honeymoon) for their 40th anniversary...if its a free ticket...my mother might not be able to pass it up!!!

to help yopur friend...this type of phobia can be helped by behavioral therapy....where they teach people to control their reactions, by breathing and relaxing...they will start off with a picture of a plane...then move on to a movie...then eventually an airplane simulator...until they get onto an actual plane...

for their honeymoon...they can go domestically on amtrack...or a cruise...or drive cross-country somewhere...
