I cannot believe how just plain mean my Aunt is! (long)

I cannot believe how just plain mean my Aunt is! (long)

Just a vent because my stomach is in a huge knot and I have been crying for a hours.
My Dad's sister is so awful. When my Nanny died she left a few pieces of jewerly- nothing Harry Winston or anything but pieces that meant a lot to her. My Nanny was THE most important person in my life. Losing her 4 years ago is still heartbreaking to me and I miss her every single day.One in particular was diamond cross that she wore almost everyday of her life since the day my grandfather gave it to her when I was a small child. Anyway long story short she cleaned out my Nanny's house when she died and took everything with her, except for a few household things that she 'let' my sister and I have. These household items, while nice, really have very little emotional tie-in to my Nanny. She never used her silver so while I love it, I don't say 'I remember my Nanny' when I see it.
Anyway I had to ask my Aunt for the cross to wear on my wedding day. I KNOW that if my Nanny were alive it would have meant the World to her that I wear it. My Aunt gave it to me to wear. My Dad told me that he wants me to keep it and that my Nanny always wanted me to have it but my Aunt is a psycho and grabbed it quick. Now that I have it my Aunt told me she wants it back and I told her how much it means to me to have it and that I really want to keep it and use it for my some-day children's christenings and it makes me feel so close to nanny when I wear it. She flipped out and told me that SHE is the daughter NOT me and that I will have he__ to pay if I even think of keeping it and she was screaming louder than my own father has ever even screamed. So I hung up the phone and called me Dad. He said he doesn't care what his sister wants and I am keeping the necklace that my Nanny always wanted me to have and that is that. So now WWIII has started in my family and I feel awful but I am more upset that my own Aunt could say horrible things to me and threaten me. I KNOW my Aunt just wants to give all of my Nanny's stuff to her son someday, even though he is NOT even in a relationship with anyone and that person will not even have known my Nanny. She is such a miserable person.

Michele, so sorry you have to go through this. She's just evil. Hold on to the cross and don't let go. It sounds like if this affects your relationship with your aunt, you're not missing much anyway.

There's no excuse for the way she treated you. Be glad you have your dad to stick up for you.

I have some pieces from both my grandmothers, so I can understand your sentimental attachment. I actually have my grandmothers engagement ring, but I don't know what to do with it... Her wedding band I wear every once in awhile (when I'm in the mood to wear gold, which is rarely).

Sorry, don't mean to go off on my own tangent (I must be catching Anna's disease )

So VERY sorry to hear this! When it comes to things like money and jewelery, its amazing how some close family members will act! True colors seem to show themselves right before a wedding! A friend of mine had this happen to her with her grmothers ring. Aunt took the ring upon death, my best friend's mom had a fight with aunt about it and ended up getting it back. My best friend had the ring for years, then somehow in a close moment with her aunt ended up letting the aunt have the ring back and has let go of the situation entirely for now, we will see what happens when her daughters get older... I wish I could offer you some advice, certainly let your Dad take over the battle, you have so many wonderful things going on now, you certainly don't need this! Perhaps your Aunt will be ridden with guilt after she thinks about it and lets you have it, till then try to cheer up and enjoy the days leading up to your wedding. Feel better!

Sorry! Duh, I'm a ditz, you already are married Anyway, try to focus on the positive things Michele! Nasty people get what's coming to them! You should casually blow her off regarding the return of the cross for now! Take care!

Oh Sweetie...I am so sorry. Boy have you spoke alot of that necklace so I know how tremendously meaningful it is to you. People can be so heartless and cruel. I think we have learned that in little and big ways. Try to keep your chin up. My advice, let you dad handle this from here. This is something he should be working out with his sister. I know how close you were to your Nanny. Cheer up an hopefully your dad can resolve this for you.

I am home tonight if you would like to talk.

Michele...I am so sorry that your aunt treated you this way...It is uncalled for...I remember you mentioning that necklace and how much it meant to you...it is only right that you have it to remember Nanny...don't let go of it...if your aunt can be a b*tch...so can you...I agree let dad take over...he seems to be in the fight...

my grandmother never had any really nice jewelry, so when she died my mom bought both me and my sister something to remember her...but since you have something...treasure it...

hang in there

I'm so sorry that your Aunt is doing this to you.
If your Nanny wanted you to have it,then you keep it. I am sure it means just as much to your Nanny as it does to you, that you have it.
Don't let your Aunt make you upset. I think she is being very stubborn and selfish.
I think everyone should think about what your Nanny wanted and thats for you to have it.
I hope your Aunt realizes how much this means to you and backs off.

I am more upset that she said such mean things to me. I have a nephew and I cannot imagine ever hurting him like this. If she wore the cross all the time I would never even ask for it but she keeps it in a box in a drawer, along with all of my Nanny's other jewerly. She doesn't wear it or even take it out of the drawer. She will not even say my grandmother's name. I understand that my Nanny's death has been hard, because it broke ALL of our hearts not just hers.

Some people can be very hurtful. Its just the way they are.Its a shame that people can argue with family over such a sensitive subject.I don't see how she can be so hurtful especially when this means so much to you.Maybe she will come to her senses and apologize. Some people never do though. They always think they are right.
I think you should keep it because that is what Nanny wanted and it means a lot to both of you.
(People that are mean and say hurtful things do so because they are unhappy with their lives. They are the way they are and unfortunately they always hurt the ones who they are close too.)

I think I missed a piece of the story. Can you clarify how you know that she wanted you to have it? Is it just something your father felt, or something that she requested explicitly?

Michele I can relate to this. Please stay strong. It sounds like you are the one who truly deserves this necklace in memory of your nanny. Let you dad deal with your aunt. Keep that necklace in a safe place. Your aunt will cool off one day. So sorry she is hurting you this way.

I'm so sorry to hear that she's putting you through this. Here's a suggestion, it's a little out there, but it just might work. Is there any way you could buy a cross that looks like your nanny's? Or maybe have one made to look like it? This way, you could keep the one that has such great sentimental value to you, and she'll get the diamond cross. If she keeps it in a drawer, she'll never notice. A little mean I know, but it doesn't seem as though you're dealing with a saint.

I am sorry that you aunt is putting you through this. However, I think you should let your father deal with her. He has as much right to the cross as she does, and if he wants to give it to you, he can do so.

Michele ... I, too, am so sorry that you are going through this and you are in such emotional pain! Unfortunately, in situations like this, money and jewelry can start many family feuds.

What your aunt seems to forget is that your Dad was your Nanny's son and he has some rights too. It sounds to me like their wasn't a proper split or a right of claiming what's important to each member of your Nanny's family.

I hope that your Aunt cools down, but I agree with the other ladies ... try to calm down and let your Dad handle this unfortunate situation!!! In the end, I hope it all works out.

I would be upset if my Aunt said such nasty things to me too!
Again, I'm sorry and here's a hug ... !

Michele I feel for you.
Keep the cross, and let your dad handle it, even he said your Nanny always wanted YOU to have it.
I hope you feel a bit better today.

I feel so bad for you. I am -went thru a smiliar experience with my sister. My mom and dad have both passed away, and there have been numerous arguments. Let your dad and her argue about it, but she does owe you an apology. Try to stay calm, and try to remember your nanny in a happy way. In the meantime, keep the cross under lock and key.

michele ... this story had me in tears for you. I am so sorry that you were treated so badly, especially by your aunt. Having this cross is so special to you, I can't understand how someone couldn't see that. She is the daughter, but your relationship as the granddaughter is just as important. Sounds as if she's envious of your relationship with her mother. Maybe you had the kind of relationship with her that she wanted.

I also think that you're lucky that your father is there to protect you. Let him handle her. But I think that this is more about her than about you. Feel better, sweetie!

That is awful, Michelle My father has a lot of siblings and the passing of my Grammy did not cause as much friction as the slow decline of my Pop's health. There has been blow-up after blow-up about what to do with Grammy and Pop's house, possessions, etc. It is so sad to see a family fight over thing like that.

I agree with the rest of the ladies that you should let your father handle this. My cousins and my siblings stay out of the hoopla and we rarely speak about it with each other to avoid the inevitable 'why are you parents being such a$$es.'

I hope that your father can talk some sense into his sister, so that even if you do not end up with this particular piece of jewlery, you at least will have some momento that is significant to you.

Ohhh michele
I am so sorry that you have to deal with such a sensitive issue.
It does seem that maybe your aunt is having a hard time letting go to her mother, and its not so much an issue of having to have the necklace.
I know she said horrible mean things to you and this might seem far fetched but is there anyway you can sit down with her and talk with her?
I think your dad handling it is a good idea but maybe your aunt needs to talk about the death, maybe she needs help, maybe YOU can help her.
So many times we take anger out on ppl we shouldnt when we are hurting, it does not mean she was right, but it can help you maybe understand WHy she acted the way she did.
Hang on to the necklace, she doesnt want it back, she just needs to yell and scream right now.
I hope you guys can find a way to work it out and if not, I hope that she finds it in her heart to let go of her misery.
