If I have to hear one more time about how she CURED her child of autism and how anyone can do it like her, I am going to find her and punch her in the face.
Go back to acting, leave saving the world to DOCTORS, RESEARCHERS and TEACHERS. . .
Okay sorry, I am happy that her son is doing well but I can't stand her.

Re: I cannot stand Jenny McCarthy
Amen! Please come to my classroom Jenny McCarthy and cure my 8 students. All of my training and hard work is helping them learn to function in society but I am not as might as you who can cure the incurable.
Thank you tilde for saying this! I needed this today!!

Re: I cannot stand Jenny McCarthy
After she comes to your classroom, I hope she can swing by my sister's house and cure my nephew. My sister knows that 'any mother has the power to cure her child' but gee she is kind of busy working so he has food to eat and taking care of his sister. Maybe she can help her with that special miracle diet that she think he could be on - maybe SHE could watch her own child starve when you take away the few foods that he DOES eat. . .
and thank you for being a teacher - kids like my nephew improve every single day because of teachers like you!!!

I wish I could agree with you and I respect your opinion B U T she brings attention to the wrong aspect. She beings attention to a 'cure' so people are not going to be as willing to fund the search for the CAUSE AND not to mention all of the UNEDUCATED people who judge the mothers who cant seem to follow her miracle cure
But I appreciate your positivity - I lack that when I talk about her!!

I agree...it's great that she's getting it out there more, but I feel...IMHO..it's in the wrong light. There is no cure and we have no idea what causes it. To cure it...we'll have to find the cause. We donated to them as our favor. I'm actually doing a walk for autism..but i'll post a thread if anyone wants to donate.

thank you for saying this - i thought i was the only one who felt this way. i'm happy for her and her son, but if she's the miracle worker, she can come to my school and work her miracles there too.
i did find her a bit... almost judgmental of mothers who don't 'take it upon themselves' to 'cure' their children. very frustrating. not to mention no one said a thing about making sure the research is proven on a 'treatment.' i can't tell you how many kids i've seen regress or just go through torture because their parents have been promised a 'cure' through one crazy approach or another (you should hear some of these things). in my opinion if you're going to advertise trying 'everything' out there, you also need to express the very real dangers in doing so.
i also find oprah to be an idiot. among other things, the last show she did on autism was so one sided and just showed it as this terrible, awful thing without really showing the kids as people who can be wonderful and full of personality. it was just really depressing and did the kids no justice at all. i just wish she would educate herself about a topic just a little before she made a whole show about it.

YES YES YES! She is SO judgmental of other mothers! She doesnt realize the kind of resources and TIME she has available that other mothers DONT to just give this a shot. She almost makes it seem like they dont WANT to help their kids. And I am VERY protective of my sister so that is definitely why she gets to me.
And I do feel that Oprah is misinformed about autism too! Thank you for saying that. Even though my nephew is 7 and still considered 'low functioning' and doesn't speak. . . he has an AWESOME personality! He loves to hug and kiss you ( as long as he is getting his way of course, lol ) and he is so so so smart. He knows everything if you ask him to point to it, he just cant say it. He is fully potty trained and can even bathe and dress himself - he feeds himself AND my sister is teaching him very simple microwave cooking skills at the moment! AND man, is he bad when he wants to be. If he wants something he will hug and kiss you and distract you in one room for a moment and then nonchalantly walk into the other room to do whatever you just told him not to do, LOL he is a little sneak! Anyway, i went off on a tangent and I know each child with autism is different - but that is my experience with autism I wish Oprah could meet him!

Re: I cannot stand Jenny McCarthy
i give her a LOT of credit for everything she's done with & for her son and everything she's bringing out about autism, but i think it comes very easy when you have the finances & the days off to do so. Her techniques are VERY detailed with diet & routine...so when u have the money to buy every ingredient & have the OPTION to be available & be home everyday you can actually invest in it. unfortunately I dont think every mom in america is in that position. imo, she's very ignorant if she doesn't think that 90% of mothers would work to cure their child if they could. what about a single mom who has to work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay the bills?? it's unfortunate, but it's the truth.

It is a combination of a dairy/gluten free diet, various medications and behavioral therapy.
Her entire system is based on the idea that vaccines cause autism and that there is mercury in vaccines. Now, no one knows what causes autism BUT if 90% of studes say that it is NOT vaccines and if vaccines do NOT contain mercury anymore. . . I dont think it is fair that she is influencing all of these people and passing off her information as FACTUAL when it is anything but!

i was just going to say that - i thought they figured out that vaccines werent the cause of autism
i agree with a couple of the other girls who said that unfortunalty, most mothers do not have the time nor $$ to do that everyday

Re: I cannot stand Jenny McCarthy
I work in the field of disabilities. I'm a Social Worker and my 'specialty' is disabilities. On one hand, I think it's wonderful that she's helped raise awareness as well as funding to support research. On the other, I think it's irresponsible to state your case in such strong, influential ways when your case (being hers) is actually just her opinion and what worked for her son. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it's impacts each and every person differently. To go on TV and say this is the cause and this is the solution is not fair. She's a celebrity, not a doctor, therapist, etc. It's irresponsible and risky. Unfortunately, the hundred of thousands of people who watch TV and see/hear her stand point and decide she's speaking from experience and what she says is the end all be all is a problem. A HUGE problem. It's a tough thing....she has more money than most and she also has the time to care for her son, feed him a special diet, etc. I think it's great that she is so proactive with her child but I also think she needs to realize that her situation is not achievable for many or most families with children with autism. I just wish she was more aware.... Autism is not a definable disorder. It's complex, it's unique to each person it impacts....so are the 'causes' and the 'solutions'. She really needs to see that because right now, all she is doing is spreading misnomers to society through the news. Sadly, this is what people will believe......celebrities are more valued than professionals in our country. (A la top news story: Clay Aiken rather than the extreme recession we may be entering.... )
