So at the start of January - like everywhere else - my job informed us that our payroll hours were going to be cut..(i guess we can be lucky that it only happened now). ANYWAY, so at first it was only 'for the next few weeks' - and one of the girls at my job is apparently being let go & i will get her position which will mean higher pay AND more hours(almost double the hours - with a raise!)...so anyway, at first when we were given the notice about the hours being cut my immediate thought was 'oh man - i need to pick up a 2nd job for now'...but my manager told me if i can, to wait a few weeks to do so because of the changes that are about to happen. ANYWAY, come today, i get my paycheck, and it is just aweful the last one wasn't as bad I guess because it still had some of my previous hourse on it...but this was almost HALF of what im used too...i expected it to be less, but definetly not as bad as it is. i saw the number & wanted to fall over. I'm going to call dh now & tell him...but we are going to be STRAPPED with money for the next month or so...and i am just so bummed because we have so many things coming up in Feb./March...let alone things from last month that we really wanted to take care of. i dont know what to do on one hand, i feel like by the time i actually get another job & get my first paycheck, i could be getting my higher position and have to quit, but on the other hand there's no gaurantee on the start date of my new pay..so what happens if that's not for a while either???? there is no WAY we are going to be able to afford everything we need to pay for with my paycheck being as low as it is...ugh. this sux..i just can not believe this economy. it is just so hard! luckily the dh & i don't fight about it - it is what it is and we refuse to fight about money - i just want things to get better & it is so hard to stay encouraged & look at the bright side of things with the way things are looking. sorry girls - this isn't a sob story by any means - just needed to vent.

As horrible as it sounds, at least you have a job. I have been so stressed with money lately (like I was supposed to get a huge raise in January and nothing) and I just think to myself 'hey at least I have income coming in'. As long as you and your DH are on the same page and cut any 'wants' instead of needs you guys will get through. Just think of the things that you while saving for your wedding (That's what I do) if we did it then, we can do it now. Question- are you working less hours or are you working the same amount of hours and getting paid less?

Taryn, i'm sorry for the situation you are in...I agree that it's a difficult decision about getting a second job or not b/c you have no idea when the new position will start at your current job. so glad to hear you and DH refuse to fight about money...I'm sure most people don't want to and try not to, but it's a stressful time...You have the best attitude, it is what it is so why fight about it.
I had the same reality yesterday too. No raises this year, my cost for my benefits nearly doubled since '08 and no OT, so my check was like I've only been here 4 years, and overall have gotten an $11k in increases and my check has NEVER been this low so I completely sympathize.

oh believe me - i am TOTALLY grateful that there is something coming in & that we are both employed right now! there are definetly so many worse-off case scenarios that we can be in...and we've actually been there so we know. but it's HARD..either way it's hard.. i am just praying for God's peace..deep down we both know he always provides for our needs.
i'm not getting paid less....my hours were cut in half. same pay, less hours.. DH's job is also cutting...hours are gradually being cut, no OT at all..things like that that add up!

Well depending on your hours I would go and try to get that second job until your new position starts. Go out there and start looking if you find something GREAT if you dont- it's ok. Cant loose anything by trying.

Re: i hate this
i'm sorry that stinks. i feel for you. there is no OT at my job for any of the managers. we are all salary. the thing that bugs me is that if a line staff employee one of my works clocks in at 6:43 for a 7:00 shift I have to write them up for stealing time. however the company is stealing time from all of the managers. if i get stuck until 5:30 or 6:00 due to an emergency oh well no extra pay. and then if we try to make up those hours by say leaving an hour early or coming in a hour late ppl are looking for us like where is so and so? we can't win. it is so unfair. and then you wonder why ppl are not dedicated. i am dedicated but my time is precious and i refuse to work for you for free. you pay me 40 hours that is what you get. oh and now our new boss wants to dock us for our 30min lunch break, of have us work an extra half hour. really. i don't even get a break most days. i use the time i am stuck at my computer to woof down some yogurt or something. we have had so much turn over the last year b/c ppl are getting fed up. i am one of three original managers. i can't wait for DH to start his new job in D.C. this summer so i can get out of this life sucking company.
i know i shouldn't complain...and i am thankful for my job and my income...thank you girls for the reality check....i just needed to vent
*oh and the book mulitple bleesings by kate gosselin is really good i read it on the airplane last week....and it is totally worth a shot...i found it very inspiring....

yea - i'm going to. i just called dh..he always makes me feel better as do you ladies He also said that since i got my paycheck today, it's the perfect opportunity to really talk to my boss..do the whole 'It's really a lot lower than i thought it was going to be..so i need to know whats going on so I can do what's best for me' speech. either a: it'll speed things along & put me in a better place, or b: i need to get my booty looking for another job. My boss loves me so hopefully this will just speed up the promotion/increase process...i LOVE my job - so the thought of working somewhere else bums me out a little - but i'm willing to do whatever i have to do. i'm going to start digging into the job-find today and just apply & see what i come up with..in the mean time, i'm pressing my boss lol.

Aw man...that's just awful, but hopefully things will pick up again at your job. I had something similar happen right before I found out officially that my contract wasn't going to be renewed. They cut my pay for the last 2 months that I was there and it def. does make a difference. Just keep your chin up...everything will work out for the best!

things will turn around for you. All these things keep happening to everyone
If I were you I would try to stay put. You never know what could happen if you went to work somewhere else. If they started to do lay offs at a new place new hires might be the first to go. You have seniority where you are....

Taryn ... I know how it feels! Last thursday I got my first severance and my last check from work which included 100 hours of vaca time - but it wasn't direct deposited and I was questioning the taxes, so I didn't want to deposit them .. and so what was in my account was like
I feel you!!!!

Re: i hate this
aw, Taryn, I just saw this post now. So sorry to hear about that. it makes me so sad because this seems to be happening to everybody I'll be praying for you. I hope things look up soon I'm so glad that Josh is somebody you can count on though! You guys have a very strong relationship and i'm so glad that you both have each other's backs during hard times, rather than getting into a useless argument about it.
I love you, girly!! I'm sure everything will be fine. Like you said before - God IS in control. He'll carry you thru this 'bumpy road' your in.

Re: i hate this
Thankfully you still have a job but you should get a second job to make ends meet for now. I wouldn't count on promises. Even the state job I have, and I am tenured, is at risk. DH and I both work for the state and they are looking for a pay decrease, taking our location pay incr away and this year's raise, lowering us to last year's salary for both of us! Also, they cut out coffee last year and now yesterday they took away our water cooler!!

Re: i hate this
I'm so sorry! I worked retail for a long time and went thru this I gradually started getting less and less hours. It was so hard to figure out how we were going to pay bills because my paycheck was always different. I would definitely talk to your boss about what is going on. I would start looking for a part time job too because you never know when that promotion is going to go through. It can't hurt to have a backup plan.
