I have a thank-you related question

I have a thank-you related question

DH's cousin and her husband don't have a lot of money -- in fact, they are not well off at all. When we opened their card, we were shocked to see a check in it for $200 (we didn't think they'd give a gift b/c we know how hard times are for them).

Well, their check bounced. I know that they know it bounced and I never said anything to anyone b/c I really feel bad for them.

Here is my question, I'm obviously thanking them for coming and being with us, but do I just leave out the gift part? I mean, we both know it bounced. Or do I pretend like I don't know it bounced and thank them for their generous gift? I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, that is why I'm asking.

I would leave that whole part out. Just say thank you for sharing our special day with us and we hope you enjoyed yourselves! something like that

Yes, I think you should just say thank you for coming -- I think there might be a way for you to be especially thankful for their 'thought' without giving away that it bounced ... something like 'we appreciate very much your thoughtfulness'???

you hit the nail on the head. that is what I was trying to get at. I want them to know that DH and I know they have no money and the fact that they 'offered' that much meant a lot to us... i just don't know how to word it.

leave the gift part out. cus if you thank them for it, it may just be really awkward. Thank them for coming and say how nice it was having them there to celebrate with you etc. No need to mention the gift.

We had a bounced check that the couple knew about. I wrote in my card thank you for coming Yada Yada and didnt mention a gift (didnt want to make it awkward since they knew it bounced)

I think it is a fine line. You don't want to gush too much, but you want them to know you appreciate their thought, and that it didn't go unnoticed ... how about ...

'Thank you for being a part of our wedding day. Sharing the day with our guests made it that much more special, and your attendance, and thoughtfulness, will not be forgotten soon. Thanks again!'

while I see your point and what you are getting at, it could also still be awkward. Like if they get what you are getting at, it could make them feel bad. I dont know them though, so maybe not. But I think if you just thank them for coming and celebrating with you, it will be good enough.

I would leave the part about the gift out all together. Some things are best left unsaid. I am sure it is really embarrasing for them and they probably wouldnt want to be reminded.

I'd call them up....I think that people need to know these things.

She knows her check bounced... the bank sends a notice. I'm sure she is mortified as it is, I don't think a phone call is necessary.

ya they are probably so embaressed! I know I would be! And they probably didn't call you cus they know they can't offer to replace it.

We had a check bounce, as well. I basically just thanked them for coming (they came all the way from TN) and told them how great it was to see them, etc. I didn't even mention the check!
