not me.
Should have stayed single.

I was able to claim head of household because my dad lived with me and I provided him with some support. Now that I married and moved out, I can't do that anymore.

This is a stupid question -- but does that mean that as a married couple you get more of a refund?

I'm confused about the entire financial situation.

We def got more of a refund from being married and owning a house. A little over 13,000 this year.

i was disappointed. not only were we told that we would not be getting that extra rebate check (shucks!), i just found out that we're getting back about 1/2 of what we used to get as singles!

You get certain deductions for being married. We get a bonus for saying 'I DO!'!

We'd spoken with one accountant (who did our taxes last year) who said that we'd be in a different tax bracket and therefore would end up paying more if we file together. But everyone else tells me otherwise.

See, this is what I think happened to us. I think my stinkin DH pushed us up into a higher bracket and collectively - we have to pay a higher % of taxes. Is that the marriage penalty tax? Any accountants out there?

I tried to call my accountant - but good luck trying to get a hold of an accountant this time of year...

Re: I love being a NEWLYWED at tax season!!!

i work for one and i do a lot of taxes.. heres the deal. if you have legally changed your name on your ss card you have to file jointly. technically your supposed to if your married, but if its not changed on your ss card, its really hard for them to find out.. I didn't tell you that though.

you can file whats called married filing single which is still on the same tax return, but you get taxed at the single rate (which is higher then married) this is only good when one or both of you have really high deductions like you paid out a ton in medical, more then you can claim as joint, so you would file married single so that you could write of more of the dedcutions.

when you have your taxes done, your accountant will compare the #'s but usually (since your taxed at a lower rate) its best to go married filing jointly.

Also, in May the checks will go out. If you earn as a married couple less then $150,000 you will recieve a check up to 1200. but to qualify, you have to have filed your tax return by April 15, 2008. You cannot be on extension, and if you used a bank account # to have your refund automaticlly depoisted, this one will to be depoisted. heres a link

We are actually better off filing married / separate. If we filed jointly we owed the state a ton but with filing separate I get money back from the state and DH owed like $3.00.
