I wanted to go to paris and suggested it to Dh as a gift for each other - but he didnt want to (makes me think he has something up his sleeve, although he did surprise me with a weekend trip to St. Thomas in Sept.)

Trips though are probably out bec I only get 3 weeks vacation whcih we are saving for tihs summer to go to greece

You would have to look into this but, I heard that there is a romantic getaway place in the poconos with buble bath champagne glasses....how romantic is that? Perhaps there is skiing or something.

Since the first anniversary is supposed to be paper, what about tickets to a concert or sporting event?

Yeah I agree with the papaer. I think it's cute to stick to traditions like that. I gave my husband a gift certificate to a local vidoe game sote and he bought PSP and some games with it. I knew that's what he really wanted. You caould also make a basket and put gift certificates, tickets, newspaper, magazines (maybe with a subscription), stationary, photo paper, ect. ect. Good luck.
