Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
I stayed at a hotel last summer called the Grand Hotel Leveque. It was loaded with American tourists, but it was cheap, ($85-90 Euros a night for two people), clean, and about a 10 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. The rooms are pretty small, but they're okay. Here's the website:

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
I went to Paris a few years ago and I recommend staying outside that particular area. We stayed in Montmartre, which is an artsy area, and it was really nice. There are subways which were no problem. Personally, prefer staying outside touristy areas which are always more expensive with less amenities.

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Shamma, I strongly recommend this hotel in the Latin Quarter (very close to Sorbone university and the River). We stayed there in 1998 with mom and grandma, and absolutely love the place. The crossants included in the breakfast at the hotel were like the best in all of Paris, and they're not greasy at all. The rooms were plain, but clean. Make sure to request a room with a bathroom. And I suggest you make a reservation ahead of time.
Hotel Gay Lussac 29, rue Gay Lussac Paris 75005 France
Tel: 01 43 54 23 96 Fax: 01 40 51 79 49
Hotel Gay Lussac Named after the street on which it's located, the Hotel Gay-Lussac is a 19th Century Parisian jewel, providing 35 rooms in the old city tradition of high ceilings, antique furnishings, and cool French doors that open to the occasional balcony. The rooms are in great condition and are sprinkled with a few modern conveniences (the elevator is new, and some rooms come with toilet and shower). But for the most part, this is the real thing...complete with dingy hallways.
Though not in the center of the Latin Quarter, the Gay-Lussac is conveniently located right off the rue St-Jaques, allowing for an easy walk to the Sorbonne or Place St-Michel. Breakfast Included Cash Only 35 Rooms

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
LOL, Shamma:
Many European hotels have hall bathrooms (kind of like your college dorms), so what I am trying to say is that you ask for the room with a toilet/shower inside the room, not in a hall. they're usually $10-$20 more expensive than the dorm kind of rooms, but for many americans its worth it...
We stayed in a non-bathroom room, and hall bathrooms were OK, but if I had to stay there again and had made prior reservations, I would have chosen the room with a bathroom.
What happened to us is that I made a reservation to such a hotel that upon arrival, my mom refused to stay there and we needed to find a place to sleep fast during the World Cup time. Luckily, Hotel Gay Lussac happened to be just around the corner from the icky place and they had vacant rooms.

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Thanks sweetie. I just noticed that. When I clicked check availability. I could never do the college dorm thing, at least not on my vacation.
there is an 'undiscovered' hotel that books months in advanced, but is the price of a hostel...I'm pretty sure the name is Hotel Henry II...or Port Henry??
definitely Henry something
but I will agree that anywhere you are in Paris is accessible
froemmers usually has good deals in their books...and is geared to the older (non backpacker) traveler

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Shamma, I think you should consider other areas as well. We stayed on the Rue du Rivoli & were able to walk almost everywhere. The places we stayed at were a little pricey, but FM if you want & I'll send you whatever info i have.

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Hi Shamma:
I am not sure how much you are looking to spend, but I would recommend the following hotels:
MILLENNIUM OPÉRA 12 bd. Haussmann, Opéra/Grands Boulevards, Paris 75009, France Phone: 01-49-49-16-00 Fax: 01-49-49-17-00
I stayed here in August of 2001 and loved it. I have found that most Parisian hotels are much smaller than American ones. This hotel has more 'American' size rooms and they have private bathrooms. It is close the Metro and you can pretty much get anywhere you need to go on the Metro.
CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS 12 rue Vieille-du-Temple, Le Marais, Paris 75004, France Phone: 01-42-72-34-12 Fax: 01-42-72-34-63
More Parisian in flavor, and more affordable then the Millennium (my job paid for that one). They have an optional continental breakfastIf you book here, ask for a front-facing room (they are bigger).
I have included the phone numbers because a lot of times if you try to book the hotels online, you have to go through a booking service. I think you can get better deals and sometimes better service by contacting the hotels directly.
Also, I would highly recommend fodors.com. They have a section called 'Rants and Raves' in which people give their reviews of hotels, restaurants, and toursisty things to do.
I hope that helps.

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
We went there for OUR honeymoon for 11 days, late August 2002 until mid September 2002. We'd had a blast! We'd booked our trip through Liberty Travel, www.libertytravel.com as one package including hotel, airfare, breakfast buffet, etc.
The food is great in Paris, lots of meat but not prime like USDA prime in America but still good. The crepes are great and the pastries!! Oh God, you can't miss out on the pastries. Clothing shopping is very expensive. Nice shopping and pregitious yet very expensive mall: Galeries Lafayette--www.galerieslafayette.com
Here are some sites to research and learn about the culture and country: www.francetourism.com www.visiteurope.com/France www.franceguide.com
I recommend to purchase American Express travel check before you leave the US like we did and Euro currency. Hubby took French language courses for 4 years in high school and recently took a refresher course at the New School-one day French for travelers.
Enjoy! Have fun in the City of Lights!

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
I stayed at the Hotel Galileo, which was half a block of the Champs. When I get home, I will look up the exact info. It was nice, clean and affordable. More details to come...

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Hi there- I was there in September and we stayed at a Hilton right near the Eiffel Tower. It was a nice hotel - very clean and americanized but I wouldn't stay near the Eiffel Tower. There is not much over there- I would stay at by the Champs Elysees. I think there's a hotel called Hotel Rochester or Hotel Raphael - I've heard good things about those! Good luck! Let us know what you decide. Do you have your London hotel? We stayed at the Hilton in Mayfair and that was great- Mayfair is quiet but in a good central location- it was right near the Hyde Park tube station! I'm so jealous- I want to go back!!

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
I think Expedia mainly deals with large chain hotels and those that cater to tour packages. I think a lot of the hotels mentioned on this thread are a bit smaller and/or privately owned, so they may not list on Expedia.
If you really want to stay near the Champs Elysees, there is a Marriott that is right on that street. You will definitely pay more money though, then if you decided to stay a few blocks away.
Also - since it is considered a 'non-peak' time in Paris some of the hotels have very reasonable discount rates and packages that may be worth checking into.
You are going to have such a great time Shamma. Can you fit someone who is 5'5' in your suitcase?

Re: I NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR HOTELS IN PARIS
Food wasn't too expensive but drinks are- I don't mean wine although that is too but I mean Soda. We went to one place and for a big glass it was $11 for each drink. They handed us 2 bills- one for food and one for 2 sodas- they were almost the same!!
