I need to vent for a moment.

I need to vent for a moment.

Why is it that I cannot have a conversation with my co-workers who are all parents without this:

'Michelle, you don't have children and you just don't know. One day you will be a parent and understand.'

I have 6 nieces and nephews and 3 very younger brothers and sisters. Yes, I do not have my own child, but am I some sort of blind moron as to children. I do know that High School Musical has a sequel and it is oh so cool and the Wii is super fun (although I figured that out myself) Does my choice not to procreate yet make me some useless waste of space on this planet? Should I be scorned and forced to sit staring into space during lunch because I chose not to burden the economy with another child that cannot be cared for (yes, we are not broke, but cannot afford and do not want children at this time). But I know what kids watch, play etc. Why can't I mention something without being told this? And more important, if you want to do this, why torture me when I tell them I don't want to go to lunch?

And why is it that when I talked about wedding planning, they didn't want to hear it (unless it involved a 'story' because it was so so boring!), but I have sat through numerous lunches listening to them talk about every time their child breathed, and worse, the potty talk during lunch. I can't talk about sex, but they can talk about poopie and potties. And, if I told them how boring talking about their kids non-stop was, we revert back to the above comment.

I really enjoy my co-workers and it is fun to talk to them about other things, but it seriously burns me when I get that dumb and inconsiderate comment. Why is it that you get no credit in this world unless you procreate? Thank God I got married-at least I get taken slightly more seriously!

Okay, thanks, vent over.

Re: I need to vent for a moment.

It takes a lot for certain people with kids to realize there is more to life than kids. Maybe it's because they hang out with lots of other people with kids, or because they spend a lot of time at home doing kid stuff or talking about kid stuff, or maybe they just aren't getting enough sleep, but it seems to me there are far too many people out there who seem to mysteriously lose all memory of their life before they had kids. I feel your pain. Not only is it boring and annoying, but the questions they ask of you are insensitive. They're probably just jealous that you can go somewhere fun like a LIW PP without having to find a babysitter.

Hang in there - when all else fails, pick up one of those office voodoo dolls at Barnes and Noble

P.S. How could you possibly do the job that you do without understanding children? Are they stupid?

Thanks! That made me feel better! Maybe I will bring in my PP purchases and show them!

And a question I posed to DH-what if someone couldn't have children? Do these people think how their insensitive comments could hurt someone who was physically incapable of having children?

And I bet they are jealous!

I have known people who had difficulty TTC. All they wanted was a baby and all they got was people going 'what are you WAITING for??' It's so incredibly hurtful. It should really be none of anyone's business unless the person whose uterus is involved directly raises it

They are so totally jealous. Their reactions would be priceless if you showed up at lunch and slapped a big vibrator on the table That actually reminds me of the SATC episode where Charlotte shows up at brunch and slams a box of tampons on the table

I remember that one!

But this also poses another SATC-esque question-Why is it unless a woman gets married and has children, she is not taken seriously. Do some people have frontal lobotomies when they become parents? On the flip side, my best friend at work is two years older than me, married with two children. She barely talks about them, and when she does, she happily asks and listens to my opinion and does not fault me for not having children. Then there are others, the ones that think you are an immature waste of space for not having children. It is really no one's business, and they really need to think before speaking!

And was it just me, or were most of us taught that toilet talk is not for the dinner table? Why is it okay to listen to that while I am trying to eat?

My good friend (who is a lawyer too!) would be a formidable ally for you on this subject. She and her DH have chosen not to have kids, and people constantly question her decision or say things like 'oh, your motherly instincts just haven't kicked in yet.' It drives her up a wall. She argues that women who choose not to have kids should still be entitled to some kind of sabbatical (akin to maternity leave) during which they could pursue an interest that would better themselves.

A sub-species of these crazy parent people are the ones who don't understand how anyone could love an animal like a child. I have no kids, but I have a dog who is like my kid. Would things be different if I had a human child? I doubt it, except that i'd have to share my time more. But why do people say 'oh it's just a dog' or 'it'sj ust a cat' or whatever?

Bottom line: Never assume you know how other people think.

I'm glad you have at least one close friend at work who is NORMAL.

See, and I would toast your friend for that decision-it is personal and she has a right to make that decision. She should be allowed an equivalent leave to pursue what she wants to do. Personally, as a children's attorney, I see many people who have kids and shouldn't have. If you don't want them, who cares?!?

Another SATC episode-when Carrie's Manolos are stolen at a baby shower. She is made to feel like poop because she made a decision to be a successful single woman and not do the marriage or kid thing. This was the one when she registered at Manolo Blahnik for her marriage to herself. Why aren't women celebrated for being comfortable with their decisions? What is wrong with a career driven woman?

I think we should be applauded for being responsible, not made to feel badly about personal choices, and we should be treated as people. My life means something without children! And I have a right to be tired or busy-don't use that as the point to drop the child line on me, because I personally could use the 'you don't have a chronic illness which makes you exhausted constantly so you don't understand. Maybe one day'....people would love that one!

And my kittens are like my children also-they are the only children I want right now. People need to respect us and our pets!

try telling people you are NOT having kids....and do NOT want them..and it's by CHOICE...lord help me when people ramble on about their kids sometimes...or better yet you are trying to have a conversation with them on the phone & the kids either constantly interrupt or are screaming in the backrground...

now if they were talking about their puppy i'd be all ears!!! haha...sorry you have to lunch with losers

Yes, pets I can discuss all day long. Kids, not so much. And if I am in a group of people without pets, I don't discuss mine.

Can we just carry tranquilizer guns and shoot these people mid-sentence? You know, if we have to be attacked for either putting off children or never having them, why can't I get a little giggle?

Can i just use my real gun? hahaha (just kidding of course!)...hmmm i think a Tazer would be a perfect alternative...much like shock therapy...or perhaps when discussing the topic of children...since they don't like your sex talk...you can casually work it into the conversation by asking them their thoughts on the best position to help conception or how many tries it took before they got preggo...

Re: I need to vent for a moment.

Some people think their boring life is so interesting. I went to lunch with a girl I worked with oh my gosh I was considering sticking forks in my eyes, at least I could have escaped in an ambulance . She had a baby had been a teacher and owned about 5 cats. The whole lunch was about her baby, the cats and cute things her former students had done. I of course had nothing interesting to add to the conversation because I was single without children or cats.
I think I must be a good actress because she thinks I am really interested in her cats and she always brings pictures in for me to see. Cats freak me out should I tell her?

You can tell us all about your super interesting life here (as long as it does not involve cats)!!!
