can you still practice professionally under your maiden name? Basically, is it legal?

Re: if you change your name can you....
what exactly do you mean by 'practice professionally' as in law or medicine? I've changed my name everywhere except work...just too much of a hassle with email changes and all...but I'm in HR so not sure if that's what your asking. I will however have to change it with records for income reporting, so you may need to ask your accountant. HTH

Re: if you change your name can you....
My cousin is a lawyer and has kept her maiden name because it's too much of a hassle to change it on her documents, but she has changed her name legally (SS and DMV, etc) to her husband's name.
Another friend I used to work with uses her maiden name at work (she's not a lawyer or anything, just a PR person) because again, she didn't want to go through the hassle of changing it with HR. But she uses her husband's name everywhere else ... so I am sure you can do it. You should check with your accountant though, re: how it works with your taxes (having one name on your work documents but another elsewhere).

When it comes to taxes you must change the name legally or at least through HR. Your w-2 at the end of the year has to match your SS #. I am not sure about practicing and the legalities but as long as your paycheck is under your legal name that is all that matters.

As far as I know you can work under an AKA (like stars have a stage name) your W-2 has to have your legal name but otherwise its ok.
