For Alison, 26, of West Islip, L.I., getting engaged before her older sister caused even greater friction.
'I was 22 and she was 24 when my mom came home from seeing a psychic and said she'd been told there'd be an engagement within the year.
'I automatically thought it would be my older sister, but it didn't work out with her and her boyfriend and I ended up getting engaged a few months later,' she explains.
During the wedding planning, Alison began to notice her older sister's behavior change.
'My sister would say, 'I'm never having a big wedding.' That was her way of showing she was upset. I know she didn't want to come with me to try on my dress and I felt I had to drag her everywhere.'
But, having her older sister agree to be her maid of honor did have one upside.
'She'd been in weddings before and I'd never been a bridesmaid, so she knew a lot more about how to plan things like the shower,' reasons Alison.
After the wedding, Alison finally plucked up the courage to bring up the subject of jealousy and try to clear the air.
'We were in the car, talking about my wedding and I told her I felt bad that she felt jealous. 'Of course I was,' she admitted it. She said she didn't want to ruin anything and didn't want me to feel bad. She was in a relationship by the time we had the conversation, so that made it easier to talk about how we really felt,' Alison says.
Alison and her older sister have become close again, despite the initial awkwardness. In fact, she's now preparing to offer advice to her big sis as her wedding day approaches.
'She's about to get engaged and she asked me to be her matron of honor when she gets married. Now, I'm the old married bag who can give her advice,' she laughs.
