I'm nuts

Original post by ant n tilde

I am hesitating applying for this promotion at my job bc of the commute. Is that crazy?

I would be making $20K MORE a year.

Right now it takes me less than 15 minute to drive to work and I park in a lot across the street.

This job would involve only ONE train but it would take about an hour and a half to get there.

I dont know - I have never liked the city OR public transportation. It is a HUGE pay increase but I can't help thinking 'what if i am miserable there!!!!'

and then when I have kids my mom is going to watch them but if I am adding close to THREE hours to my day, that is going to be so hard on her. . . and I would probably have to come up with another option.

Oh yeah and obviously i could apply and NOT get it BUT its a pretty important promotion SO if I apply AND i get it AND i turn it down it would be career suicide. . .

Shouldn't this be easier??!

Any advice?

DO IT!!!!!!!!

Tilde I work in lower manhattan and love it. When it's nice I go and have lunch by the water, and it's really not like midtown.....down here it's all tiny streets, some of them with no cars at all. I'm not going to say it's not crowded, but it's just....different...than midtown and I worked in midtown for many years so I know the difference.

20K is ALOT of money, and they're paying for the commute!!!!! Trust me, you will get used to it.

What train are you by where you live?

I live like five blocks from the A so I would just the A straight there and back!

I dont know much about the city so maybe I will go there and walk around and see what its like!

THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE

Seriously you all gave me a kick in the behind and I decided to talk to my manager before I lost my courage! So the application process has begun.

Don't know if anyone else works for the government but I swear I feel like I have to take the day off from work just to APPLY for the job, its so involved!!

Yay good for you. The hardest part is getting started . Good luck and if we hear in a few weeks you got a new job we will all know who to go to when we need to borrow money.

GOOD FOR YOU! Seriously, to jump 2 whole grades at once, is HUGE! You won't regret this. If you do get this, just remember to check your TSP percentages so you don't squirrel away more than you want/need to right now.

Tilde - good luck with the job.

It is a GREAT opportunity in many ways. As you said, career wise you would jump two levels, have a substantial pay increase AND your commute is paid for.
Do it now, worry about the children later.
You don't want to look back 10 years from now and tell yourself that you should have done it.

Go for it !

No Brainer, go for it!!. You're in Howard Beach right, once you hit Euclid or so it goes express to downtown so it won't be that bad.

Well you have an instant lunch date if you want one.

you have to go for it!! i am the biggest wimp when it comes to change, but for $20K more, i would do it!! even if you apply, and for some reason don't get it, it lets the higher ups know that you are interested in advancing your career - that's not career suicide. BIL started working in the city last year for about $15K more, and that's the only reason why he did it. he would still rather not commute into the city, but when he sees his paycheck, he realizes it's worth it.

The thing is, you have to stuff like this BEFORE you start having children. Kids limit you tremendously!!!!! Your young, focus on your career for now and go for it!!!! and an extra $20,000?? Um, have you heard we're in a recession? Good Luck!!!!

Re: I'm nuts

With gas prices these days, i would give ANYTHING to be able to just take one train to work

you can use the extra time to read (ooooh i miss that)

if it were a little raise, i would be on the fence. but for 20,000 more... i could buy myself a whole lot of happiness to make up for it.

i say go for it

I am also a federal employee and I agree with all of the previous posters - I think you should go for it.

Try also to remember that the 20k raise is for each year and it compounds each time you get a step increase. So, for example, over the next five years, the promotion is worth at least 100,000.

Plus, the increase on the %% put into your TSP and on your retirement calculations.

Really, I would gladly commute into the city for that kind of money. It's too much of an increase to pass up. Good Luck!
