Everybody's different. My friend got married in Feb 2004 and still hasn't done it. Some people never do it. It all depends on how you and your DH feel about it.

its been almost a year for me and i have only changed it on SS card - so I guess that makes it legal. For some stuff I kept my maiden name, and for other stuff, my married. Totally confusing and annoying, but it was a way for me to ease into the name change - I had a hard time with it. I ended up deciding to make my maiden name my middle, that helped.

Also, if I do any performing, I use my maiden name - sort of a 'stage name: and a way for me to hold onto it.

Are you having trouble with the actual name change, or just getting it together to do the paperwork?

I changed everything right away I would not be able to stand being in between 2 names.

I am prolonging too... I am trying to keep my maiden for as long as I can. At least when we have kids anyway.
I am in NO rush to get anything changed. Everyone is different and it is a personal opinion and choice.
A few of my students call me Mrs. M (new last name)
Some still say Mrs. T (old name) I tell them both are correct. I am still debating on changing it for next year. I don't want to!

I hear ya....My maiden name is Jennifer Lopez. I really had a hard time changing it. I have some stuff with my new name and I had to hold onto some stuff with Lopez. At school I use both names.
