Is Mexico too dangerous?

Dh and i have been to Mexico alot and we would like to go again this summer for our anniversary. Im afraid to book it because of all the crime and everything going on there. I know the resort areas are supposed to be ok but i read on trip advisor that there were military surrounding some resorts What do you girls think?

usually the resorts are well protected - but if there are such dangerous things going on, why not pick somewhere new? have a new experience & no worries

We just booked a trip to Mexico. As long as it not near the borders I would think you're pretty safe. We're going to Excellence Playa Mujeres and I heard the security is very good.

We went there on our HM..it was amazing!! You will not be dissapointed. Everythign was so beautiful. And security was very tight there. Two main gates to get into the location...we felt very safe.

I might be the only one but me and DH were planning a trip to Mexico.
Ive read and been told that its only on the borders.

The tourist areas are fairly safe so we do not feel threatened. Like any other place - use your street smarts and you should be fine.

i just got back from riviera maya 2 weeks ago. you would never know there were issues; we didn't see a thing and never left the resort, and we had an AWESOME relaxing time. I wouldn't let it stop you, especially to cancun. If anything, cabo or acapulco may be a tad more dangerous. But it's the border towns that are having the problems.

My husband and I went to Riviera Maya last year and had a blast! We stayed at the all-inclusive Grand Princess Resort. I would highly recommend the Villa package, you'll def feel pampered. The resort has everything- pool, bar, lounge, restaurants, gift shops, clubs, spa service, and even shuttle/car service to Carmen Del Playa, Cancun...and other places as well.
These areas are normally the safest since it's higher end hotels and areas for honeymoon & newlyweds- Riviera Maya & puerto vallarta.
As for other regions particularly Cancun, it's higher risk due to pick-pocketing in the market place and tourist attractions. Def keep your guard up with your pocketbooks, wallets, bags and personal belongings. ~Best of luck with your vac plans!~

I think you're safe in the touristy areas. Most of Mexico's problems are in the border areas which are gerneally no where near the resorts.

It's like saying I don't want to go to New York because LA has a lot of gang violence. Mexico is dvidedinto states just like the U.S. and somewhere like Conzumel is no where near Tiajuana. KWIM.

I think a nie resort you'll be fine.

Re: Is Mexico too dangerous?

This is a tought decision. I had a friend who went to Mexico and they had military with guns out surrounding the resort areas. They are trying to keep things like this OUT of the media...but in all actuality there is alot going on. This is what I heard from someone who went there for spring break recently. THey dont want to publicize these issues because Mexicos prime source of income, comes from the resorts and they want to keep business going. They are not only trying to keep the drug wars out of the resort areas, they are trying to keep the locals away also. Many of the locals are poor and even more poor now because of the bad economy. They are keeping them out because they are known to try and sneak around stealing from people and robbing them. Mexico is in a bad place right now...its sad.

I wouldnt be able to stomach knowing this while on vacation. I would switch....there are plenty of nice places to visit without problems like this. In fact I find Bermuda, Grand Caymens and the Bahamas alot nicer OH even the Florida Keys is nice too. JMO...Good luck
