Is this unusual or normal?

Is this unusual or normal?

Ok, so, I am wondering this because DH & I are hosting a Super Bowl party, and I'm trying to figure out if we are going to run into our usual problem.

A lotttt of the people we invite to things seem to have massive problems RSVPing. IDK what the issue is, but there is one. Whenever we have had parties like this in the past, I say to people, 'I need to know a count so we need to know how much food to order.' Now, I understand, there are always going to be a couple of 'I don't know yets' and 'maybes.'

However, we always have like, 20 'maybes' on facebook. Now, when I explain that we need to know, I often get an answer, 'Well, don't count me for food and drinks. I won't eat, because I don't know if I can come yet.' It's never said nastily. People just sincerely mean it.

Is that a normal response? This time, I'm saying that I feel rude not having enough food and it's not just about food, it's about space/chairs/etc. as well. We always wind up getting too much stuff because people can't manage to respond.

What am I supposed to do? Drop that buffalo wing! You didn't say you were coming!

That would be hilarious!

To be honest...I think people have a problem committing to events now a days. I know Im guilty of this. Personally I hate saying definite yes or no unless I know IM REQUIRED to attend. I think this is beginning to become normal especially on facebook. I hope people finally get you a definite answer!

In real life- not normal.

Facebook- very normal.

I've found from experience (and I know alot of people get annoyed by it) when you do a FB event most people don't really thnk if they will def. make it/can/want to, etc. so they take the easy way out and click 'maybe'. It allows them the chance to go if they have nothing to do, but also gives them a way out.

From now on if you need a definite head count...I'd steer clear of FB invites

I agree with this... That being said, I also think you're entitled to a commitment or decline if you ask people directly. 'You said 'maybe' on Facebook - will you be able to attend or no?'

Most people usually wait to see if they have 'something else' going on first, which means they're not really committing anyway.

People are commitment-phobes for fear that 'maybe something better will come along?' - Like what? You winning tickets to the super bowl itself? Come one people! Just say yes!

Order/make some extra food, and hopefully, if there are too many people and not enough food, people will restrain them selves.

this is exactly what i was going to saY!! maybe you could do an evite?

Honestly, I rarely attend events on FB because the majority of them were mass emailed to me. So I dont really take them that seriously. Thats not to say that your invite was mass emailed, just commenting on my opinion on that function on FB.
