Is your DH handy?

Is your DH handy?

Mine is not. I am actually handier than he is. I painted our entire apt. by myself, hang the pictures, I can patch small-medium holes in walls and make them look smooth again, I can put together small furniture. I have a lot of trouble hanging blinds and putting together anything with drawers. When we finally move (we are keeping our fingers crossed for this new apt. in Park Slope) I think we will have to hire a handyman to hang the blinds and doors that I want to change.

Re: Is your DH handy?

this is the funniest thread! We also just moved into a home and DH Is NOT handy. Not at all. He can do a few things though. He can certainly fix things.

The way I handled it was by giving him a lot of smaller things to do (ie: hanging pictures, fixing things with screws, etc.) and I had a contractor come to do big jobs.

If he got insulted that I called the handyman, I'd exxagerate and explain that it required expert knowledge. FOr example, when he got annoyed that I had someone come in to do a cieling fan, I explained to him that it needed someone with electrical expertise, becuase there is wiring, it is a fire hazard, etc.

I also thank him profusely and constantly build him up for the things he does. I think you'll also realize that while your DH is not of contractor level expertise, he'll surprise you with a lot of the things he can do.......just make sure to give him all the projects you know he'll do well with (the drawers) and let him know what a great job he does on EVERYTHING.

Re: Is your DH handy?

HAHAHA! Your DH sounds like mine...i love him for trying, but sometimes he has no freakin' clue! I know more about fixingcars & houses than he does...he always says 'My Dad taught me to get a job to earn enough $ to pay someone to do it'...to which i reply 'My Dad taught me how to just do it myself!'...i always helped my Dad on projects & my BF growing up was a guy..so i learned alot over the years. I was also the only girl in shop class in HS...home-ec just wasn't my thing!

I won't even get into the time the faucet in the tub was leaking...and he insisted we needed to rip the whole wall down...i was like 'um...honey...people are not re-doing their entire bathroom everytime a faucet leaks..we need to change the seats in the faucet..that is it...no wall ripping necessary!'

ETA: Forgot to say that he touched up a scratch on his truck once with Rustoleum paint...unfortunately i saw it after the fact! I was like' what the hell did you use??' when he told me...i was like...you go to the dealer & buy paint that matches you ding dong!!!! I love him to death for trying though...

SO glad I'm not alone. Nope, he's not really. I guess if he puts his mind to it he is...but for some reason, his Dad who is SUPER handy...never taught him anything!

He was not until we bought our house- we gutted everyroom and did all the work ourselves (w/ the help of famiy). DH learned so much along the way that he is now a pro at being handy!

Nooo unfortunately not handy at all!
Lots of times my dad will come over & help us out with fixing things. Or we have to hire someone to do the big jobs.
