Jesus Fish

I've been meaning to ask you ladies - what does it mean? Why a fish?

Re: Jesus Fish

you can google for whole historical background, but long story short is that the fish, in greek the word is 'ichthys,' is a symbol for Christ that has been used since the early church was established. The greek letters of ichthys make up an acronym that stands for 'Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior.'

thanks babe.
I just read about it on wikepedia.
It's funny, but I never noticed them until about 3 years ago when they started popping up on the back of cars.

no prob. im sure there are better explanations but thats the basic gist (sp?). yea those decals and stuff have really grown in popularity. and then its like a heightened awareness thing where once you really notice something for the first time, then you pick up on it or tend to it more when you see it again so it seems like all the sudden you're seeing it all over place, ya know.

Re: Jesus Fish

hmmm i read somewhere that in the early days of the church it was the equivalent of today's crucifix. Jesus often refered to fish and fisherman in his parables and it came to be a representation of him...that's how i understand it

yea you can find several references to fish in the gospels, but i think ive read that the symbol predates the bible...it was used in art and so on. not sure!

Re: Jesus Fish

Ichthys (Greek: ?????, capitalized ??T?S; also transliterated and Latinized as ichthys, icthus, ichthus or ikhthus; ichthus), is the Ancient and Classical Greek word for 'fish.' In English it refers to a symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs, the ends of the right side extending beyond the meeting point so as to resemble the profile of a fish, said to have been used by early Christians as a secret symbol and now known colloquially as the 'Jesus fish'.' Greek ????? is an acronym (or backronym) of ??s??? ???st??, Te?? ????, S?t?? 'Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour.'

there's a lot more on wikepedia

Read on Wiki about the journey and presence that it'd took.

I am going to go read up about it on wiki but i think it has become more popular lately bc its a reminder of other aspects of Jesus - as a fisherman and it has a gentler history. . . .rather than the crucifix which is obviously more of a violent, colder symbol.

umm...quite random that this popped up again!

anyways, while im here, tilde, do you really think of the cross as a violent, cold symbol? i guess i look at it like... what happened was a violent act but the cross is a symbol of hope and a reminder of God's love and saving grace for Christians.

to me when i think 'crucifix' i think the cross with jesus nailed and his head hung... which mourns his death..

when i hear 'cross' i think an EMPTY cross...celebrating the promise of jesus christ, eternal life & hope..

does that make sense?? lol

yes!

its definitely a bittersweet symbol that way... bc of what was done to Christ and also how the cross represents hope in Him.

I get your viewpoints and I definitely agree that when it is relflected upon the cross and crucifix can be seen as symbols of Hope. But, I guess I was referring to more of the 'casual observer' the fish symbol or a nativity may be a more welcoming symbol to the faith!
