i need some advice as to what u would do if this situation came up because i dont know if i should be applying for jobs that are super entry level or just continue to apply for things that are in my range.
would u 1. collect unemployment and look for a job that has similar responsibilities/pay as the previous job (which is hard because im between entry level and management)
2. take a completely entry level job that pays basically the same as unemployment because of the economy and because its useful experience (online media stuff)
the problem with option 1 - who knows if ill get any interviews/offers or how bad the economy is going to get...and we cant apply for a mortgage until i have 'stable' income
the problem with option 2 is that i wouldnt have time to go on other interviews
eta - i didnt receive offers yet. i just dont even know if i'm supposed to be applying to things that are so far off track during these times or looking for something comparable.

1. continue to collect unemployment (i just started) and look for a job that has similar responsibilities/pay as the previous job (which is hard because im between entry level and management)
If it doesn't work out after 1 month of searching in your field then go for something just to get a paycheck and keep looking.

if i temp i can't collect unemployment (unless i earn less than 405 a week) and most temp stuff is admin. but maybe i can keep temping in mind once the unemployment runs out if i still have nada

Re: job advice/question
That's a tough question to answer.
I guess I would have to carefully look at the job I was offered and think about
----Is there room to move up in the company ---Will I like the people I work with ---Is my boss a mean jerk or someone will will be flexible w/ me ---R the benefits good ---R the hours good for my schedule (include commute) ---Will I be able to deal w/ doing entry-level work knowing that I'm worth more ---Will I be able to access LIW from work (obviously the most important question!!!!!0
These r always things i think about. Realistically, most places won't be hiring again until after the holidays---if at all---a lot of places have hiring freezes now.
Good luck!!!

I believe you know what's the best option for you but I just wanted to put this out there:
What if you don't find a better job before the unemployment runs out?
Thinking a little more of the long term here any job would be better than no job. At least in my opinion. When / if you turn down that position, someone else will accept it. There's always a chance you may not like a job you accept.

i'm in marketing too and no one that i know is hiring- and i dont get the impression they will be hiring until the economy is better- which is a ways off.
if you can find something thats great, i would take it, hang out for 6 months and try and find something else. good luck

10'er crashing (sorry- i just really like your guys' board, i lurk all the time LOL)...
I would search for a job in your field for a month or two since you just started to collect unemployment. if you don't find anything then i would just take the other job and feel it out for a bit until the economy gets better

If you take the entry level job, will there be room for growth lets say in 6 moths? I dont' remember how long unemployment lasts but I have a friend who was on it for that long. Also, it is illegal to refuse a job offer while on unemployment. I would edit your post since it's a public forum.

Re: job advice/question
Ughhh that is such a hard decision. If I were you I'd wait a max of 3 months to find what you are looking for. (How long is for unemployment for again - 6 mos?)
This is the reason you should wait - if you take something lower the company is going to grill u to as if u are gonna stay. Also it will be hard to move up. Or if u stay with them awhile (say a year) - it may be hard to get a job at the level u were previously at.
2 quick stories - I was on unemployment a few yrs ago and waited almost 4 months to find a job that was the salary I wanted and the title I wanted. I was not going to settle. I went on a ton of interviews and to 10 temp/ recruiting agencies and just held my ground till I found what I wanted. But this was a few yrs ago.
2nd story, I used to work in HR for many years and now I took a tranfer to something else (admin asst) - and yes the $$ is good but if I ever wanted to go back to hr I feel it would be very hard and I'd have to start all over and bottom of the totem pole. Ugh - I know it is such a hard decision but just keep thinking about it and weighing out your pros and cons. Too bad u couldn't find a cash job. Have u considered nannying? I considered that too while I was unemployed. Good luck and keep us posted

i need some advice as to what u would do in this situation
background - i have 5 years of experience in marketing/print media + my mba
would u 1. continue to collect unemployment (i just started) and look for a job that has similar responsibilities/pay as the previous job (which is hard because im between entry level and management)
2. take a completely entry level job that u were offered that pays basically the same as unemployment because of the economy and because its useful experience (online media stuff)
the problem with option 1 - who knows if ill get any interviews/offers or how bad the economy is going to get...and we cant apply for a mortgage until i have 'stable' income
the problem with option 2 is that if i take the job and hate it - i cant quit and go back to unemployment and probably wont have time to go on other interviews because its 9-6 in suffolk and i cant just sneak out and wont have vacation at first.
I'm in exactly the same situation as you with the same backround. I've been doing your option 1 since I found out my contract wasn't being renewed after 12/31. I've since sstopped to just focus on the wedding and worry about everything after the wedding.
Come Jan. I'm going to start searching a job combinging your option 1 and option 2. Pretty much looking for either.
However you can kind-of 'temp' while doing marketing by taking contract positions, which is basically a consultant positions. That's what I did at my current job and On Mon. I'm interviewing for another contract job that would be covering a maternity leave from Jan-May.
Good luck...it's a very confusing place to be in.

It sounds like the job she was offered is not in the same field as she is in now - so maybe that's different?

i wasn't offered a job. im just applying to all types of jobs and i dont know what im supposed to be because i dont know what i would do if i were in the situation of being offered a job that's sooo below what i did. so do i apply to these opportunities knowing the pay will be low and im overqualified or do i continue to collect and look for things more comparable to what i used to do???
like is the point of unemployment to just find annnny job or is it to find something similar to what u were doing before the situation of a lay off occurred?
eta the site says - Be willing to accept the usual rate of pay for a person of your qualifications and experience AND Federal law says that states may not deny unemployment benefits to eligible employees for refusing to accept “new work,” if the “wages, hours, or other conditions of the work offered are substantially less favorable to the individual than those prevailing for similar work in the locality.”
What is an offer of “new work?” New work covers new assignments when the job contains different duties from those the employee agreed to in his or her contract. It also covers different terms or conditions of employment from those in the existing contract. If a new job offer consists of different duties than a prior job, it is new work. For example, if a person previously worked as a secretary, and is offered a job as an accounting clerk, this is “new work,” even if the same employer is involved. If the transfer or the new job is at $8 per hour, and the prior job was at $10 per hour, it is new work.
