I'm having a lot of trouble job hunting in GA. I have a degree in psyc and I'd eventually like to be a guidance counselor (but I have to go back for my MA). In the meantime, I really wanted to work in a University setting as a Admissions Counselor. Problem is, there are NO opennings. And other than that, I really dont know what I'm qualified to do I work in Customer Support right now, but im an intern (with the same company for over a year). I'm worried about tkaing too much of a pay cut down there and most of the Customer Support positions ive seen down there are literally like $10 per hour less than what im making up here...thats a HUGE loss.
I've been job searching down there for over 3 months and found nothing. I did send my resume to a few -- one called but needed the position filled ASAP (I cant start til September) and the others never called.
Its so discouraging..... I'm terrified of going down there and being job-less for months. Most of the wives down there that I talk to said they were out of a job for 3 -4 months when they moved there We NEED my salary to live because DH doesnt get paid enough for both of us.
sorry for the vent.....i just feel like im never going to find something.

Hi Jenn...
one more place that you MUST look for jobs: the Chronicle of Higher Education....
When i was job searching in higher education ( i worked in student affairs for a few years) this was my lifeline in terms of job searching.
also, i would consider student affairs jobs more so than an admission counselor position if you want to eventaully be a counselor. admissions is great, but positons like a hall director, area coordinator, student activities, etc. gives you so much hands on experience with the students... you are the advocate outside the classroom. i ran a residence hall and i dealt with it all: drink kids, roommate conflicts, eating disorders, training student leaders (RAs), campus ministry, etc. many of my colleagues in student affairs were in masters programs for counseling and the parallels between the 2 fields is amazing. you will learn so much!!!
also, look into colleges in your new area that have a school cousneling program, try to get a job there. 99.9% of colleges and universities give FULL tuition remission to their employees. when i worked in student afffairs, NONE of us paid for our masters degrees and worked while we got them.
Please feel free to FM if you haven any questions or concerns. i worked at 2 different universities and interviewed at several others. unfortunately, i dont' know much about GA, but do know a lot about the field of student affairs.
GOOD LUCK!
thank you sooooo so much for this! iT really is so helpful. I had seen a lot of job postings for student affairs, but I just wasnt really sure if I qualify for any of them. I have a decent amount of experience as an intern in student affairs, but I just feel like I wouldnt have the slightest idea how to actually work as a full-time professional in that department. But now that I know, I'll definately keep my eyes open for them!
Its difficult.....it seems like there arent many openings in GA But this website will definately help the search! Thankyou!!!!!!

glad that my post was helpful! you would be surprised... you may be more qualified than you think. when i was hired as a hall director, the only experience i had was being involved on campus when i was a student (I was a resident assistant, involved in clubs, etc.) and a year of work experience before i went bac kto grad. school.
Sometimes they want life experience and the realization that you will bring that to the table when working with students. Also, pursuing a counsling degree at the same time is often a plus...
I wouldn't shy away from it completely.... i would apply to a few things and see what happens. good luck!

how about going thru a head hunter...they may know of more job openings than are posted on the internet or in newspapers...hang in there..you'll get something!!!
Going through a head hunter is how I got my new job in Albany. While it cost me a few dollars, it did get me interviews and a job very quickly (less than 2 weeks)
Also - the pay might be less, but the cost of living is probably less too so it balances out a bit. I am getting paid like 15k less to do the same thing i did last year
