Jobs.....

Original post by autumnbride10

With the economy the way it is, I was wondering...are there any jobs that are 'safe' these days? I would like to go into a more 'creative' field, but I worry...which is worse...corporate America, or the people staring their own business?

I read somewhere once about being a dog groomer!! LOL!! I think I may have to take the class at Boces!! Maybe I can drive one of those Sexy grooming Vans around!! LIke the one from Dumb and Dumber MUTT AND CUTT!!!

You don't even know how much of a joke this is between DH and I. There was a time I really wanted to do this - I would love to work with dogs and I think that being a groomer is a great job. Not a ton of training and they make a good salary. It's not a joke for ME because I would love to do this, but DH jokes about it all the time.

Maybe now that I am laid off I can actually look into it!

OMG you really don't want to do this. I did it for a while right before my wedding. If you really really love doing it, then you won't mind the constant sh*t smell and cleaning it too! The place I worked in, you were responsible for your own clients. I had to wash, dry, cut, groom and the worst part, clean up after them. Honestly, if it was only cutting and grooming, I would have stayed there but the rest is the worst! Everyday, I was soaked from head to toe from them shaking while in the tub. The worst was when I had to groom a skunked dog. I actually threw up in the bathroom from the smell once! We used industrial dryers for maximum fluff and texture and they were loud. The dogs hated them and probably half them tryed to bite the dryer or me . Doing the hair cuts was fun though (especially putting little bows in their hair). I think I was just in the wrong place though. Really hard work and the way wasn't that great. Another groomer I know, worked in a different place and she was making almost double my salery. I guess it all depends on where you work.

I am laid off myself and I was thinking about taking wedding planning courses. DH makes enough $$ for us right now so we can live woithout my income for a few months. I think it might be fun and I can really get into that. But I always have grooming to fall back on!

My job is 100% safe!!! its very relieving to know I don't ever have to worry..I work with mentally ill people...so the economy has nothing to do with this..The healthcare industry is very safe!!!!!!!!

I'm still worried. Even though my hospital is on high occupancy if people don't have insurance due to downsizing / layoffs and the hospital doesn't get paid, neither do the workers. So in that respect I'm worried. So far I've only heard of hospitals letting go of LPNs not RNs... but it's out there. Hiring for nurses has slowed some.
