Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

Hi Ladies,

DH and I just got an invitation to a wedding. The invitation was very fancy and at the bottom it said 'black tie'.

Now, I assume that means DH has to wear a tux, right? What about me? What do I wear? A floor-length gown?

It's on a Saturday night.

Thanks!

I agree, a floor length will be appropriate, especially if it is at night. If it is during the day, then you can get away with a tea length

Actually, you don't have to wear a floor length gown for a black tie wedding anymore. But you want it to be fancy enough. For example, at Senator D'Amato's black tie wedding at Oheka, there were pics of Pataki's wife wearing a short dress.

Re: Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

If it just says black tie - Men wear tuxes and women formal dress.

If it says black tie preferred or optional men can wear a dark suite rather than a tux.

Re: Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

my DH & I have been invited to one as well on a sat night... and to be honest (JMHO here, please don't flame me!) I'm a bit PO'd b/c its not optional or preferred so we have to go out and shell out like 200$ to rent DH a tux. here is my argument though... my mom said even though it doesn't say optional or preferred DH can get away with wearing a dark suit. anyone?!?

And I am wearing a pink cocktail length strapless dress... hits right below the knee and flares out. I don't think you have to wear ballgowns anymore. i went to one 2 years ago that was blacktie and wore a floor length number to that one, but really because it was in the wintertime more than anything.

Re: Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

I just went to a black tie wedding and most women there wore floor lenght gowns. We actually bought my husand a tux from Sims. It was about 200.00 for the tux, shirt, shoes and vest, tie. We figured its better to invest in a tux then to waste your money renting. JMO.

Re: Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

I'm not sure but I think it does mean floor length. Not a 'ballgown' per se (ie: big flouncy skirt) but something to the floor is probably most appropriate.

Men's Warehouse always has deals on tuxes--you can get a very basic one for about $99

Re: Just got invited to a black tie wedding, so now what?

Thanks for the tips girls! This if the first time I have been invited to a black tie wedding. The invitation does not say 'preferred or optional'.

Hey, at least it gives me the chance to go shopping!
