So Im planning on moving. Ive been at my current apartment for about 10mths now and DH and I just need something bigger. We saw another apart. we like but they require references. This is DH and I first apartment together..so what reference can I give? Also, is it proper to ask my current landlord for a reference..or is that a little awkward?

Re: Landlord reference?
It is a bit weird to ask your current landlord, do you have a lease with this landlord? How is your relationship with them? If you are cool with them you can try to go to them and tell them that you just need a bigger place and that you love living there but it is just too small for you guys, I am sure if you agree to give ample amount of time, they should give you a reference.
Otherwise, is your credit and job security good enough to tell your new potential landlord that you've been living with family? If it is you can always try that.

Re: Landlord reference?
I am not exactly all that close with my landlord. I have a month to month lease and pay my rent on time so theres no reason not to give me one..but its just weird. Is this commom for landlords to do?

Re: Landlord reference?
We went from a month to month apartment to a complex and when we filled out the application we put the address and told the new landlord that our old landlord did not want to sign anything, and then told them that our apartment was in someones house and they were afraid they'd get in trouble. THe complex landlord understood and used our credit history and our employment history.

Re: Landlord reference?
your boss and Dh's boss would be a good reference. My hubby is renting out an apartment for his sister and is askig for references as well:) Good luck!

i went from living in a basement apt into a complex. they asked for a refrence from the current landlord. i did not have a good relationship with them, they were not the most helpful when their basement flodded (outside my apt) they had us out there helping them dry it all up and then were not willing to help us out at all when we had mold in ours! so we moved out and i asked my uncle to write me up a faux refrence with his name and number saying we rented from him. they never even called!

Re: Landlord reference?
For me they specifically asked for a letter from the landlord, well the co-op board at my building asked for it. He had no problem doing so, I would just ask.
