lets talk about workplace holiday stuff..... (WITH POLL)
i've always heard that its 'unprofessional' to 'gift up' like meaning giving an actual GIFT to your boss or your bosses boss... i guess there are certain exceptions - like if you are BFF with your boss outside of work or something... i've never done it - i usually just give a card and a candy cane
so this leads me to my poll... b/c i'm curious AND bored lol

I used to give scratchoffs to my bosses and my old mentors ( from when i started) but they reacted kind of . . . strange so i wont be doing that again.
It is hard, I work for the government so there are all sorts of rules and regulations with this type of thing it makes it a bit awkward

It's weird bc I think it depends the company and the 'feel' of your coworkers, bosses. In my last job i would just bring in cards with candy canes. I think for this job since I have only been here 6 months I am going to bring in cookies or cupcakes and set them out for everyone.

I agree with this. At my last job we did a Kris Kringle (there was only 9 of us) and my boss/owner participated. I also mailed cards to everyone at their home.
Here I send cards to my friends at their homes. As for my boss -- one team did it for their direct report so now we all do. We just chip in and give a gift card. Very annoying!

I semi baked for everyone. I bought the chinese food containers from michaels and I made fudge, chocolate covered oreos, coconut/cranberry/walnut clusters and peppermint bark. I only did it because they threw me a work shower before my wedding. Normally they all get coal.

This is my first year here. I was a temp here a few years ago and some of the bankers gave me a card with money. I work in a large corporate office, so on my floor there is like 100 people. I might make some cookies and bring them in to share. I cover for 5 bankers and help out with like 6 others. Some of them are extremely wealthy and I wouldnt even know what to get them!! LOL! Their weekly pay is double or triple my yearly salary! I was out shopping with another assistant the other day and she was buying stuff for her boss and the HR people. I dont know them that well, so I hope its not expected that i get them gifts....

My asst and I exchange gifts. I give her a $50 giftcard and she does the same for me....kinda silly....but that's what we usually do!

we are a small office, we have a pres and vice pres and then it is 4 of us 'little people' we usually pool our $$ together and get the Big Boss men a present... this year we are giving them gift baskets with their favorite treats inside like candies, alcohol, etc...

It's very corporate and I don't do a darn thing.
I don't get a holiday bonus either, haven't in any of the 14 years I've been here, all the more reason to not do a darn thing, even if I did like my boss.

Re: lets talk about workplace holiday stuff..... (WITH POLL)
I hate the whole gift-giving thing at my office. I work in commercial real estate, I'm an assistant. It's customary for the brokers to give their assistant's cash for the holidays. Granted I don't mind this at all. But apparently I found out last year it's also customary for us assistants to give the brokers we work for 'gifts' as well. I work for 5 brokers, that's alot. So i asked the other assistants last year what they usually give and they all give different things, like ties, personalized things, cufflinks, etc. So there I was a week before xmas running around the city buying gifts for the brokers I work for (mind you I had only started working here in Sept so that's 4 months before xmas). I gave my 2 senior guys nice ties and their juniors each a set of cufflinks. Then I worked for one female broker as well, I got her a nice bracelet from Macy's. Spent way too much money if you ask me (considering what I make but whatever). Oh, and I forgot, all the assistants also exchange little gifts . There are 6 of us. So thats 5 more little gifts I had to buy...I got them various lotion things. And then there's the receptionist and the 2 guys who work in the copy/mail room who it's 'standard' for everyone to gift as well. I got the receptionist a lotion gift as well and the 2 copy room guys small bottles of booze (this is what the other assts told me they give). Basically it's like a gigantic 'you scratch my back, I scratch yours' environment. I get it, I do, and we do mostly all help each other out in different ways, but to me it's just too much. I ended up spending so much money.
This year, I decided I'm not playing the same way. I'm freakin 8 months pregnant and could not lug all these gifts into work, let alone shop for them and I just do not have the money to spend on all these people that I don't even associate with one bit outside the office. So I'm having bottles of wine delivered right to the office for my group of brokers (who mind you while I sit here all big and pregnant for the last 8 months have yet to ONCE ask me if I need anything, if they can get me anything when they run out, if i'm hungry, if i'm thirsty, if I'm feeling ok, nothing....I do EVERYTHING for them) and baking cookies for the other assistants and the receptionist. The copy/mail room guys can go scratch because over the past year they've done shiit for me.
Vent over.
