LI Cities Suggestions.... (HELP!!)

LI Cities Suggestions.... (HELP!!)

So DH and I have decided to move back north but we definitely want to stay in the NYS. He and I have definite job offers in NY. (Thank God!)

So lets help Emily search for homes so I can convince DH why we should move to LI instead of Orange County...

1 - What city do you live in and what do you like/ dislike?

2 - Any suggestions where we should look (Nassau and Suffolk)? Why?

3 - Do you recommend us not looking into LI and Why?

ITA!!!!

ETA: Spelling... Thanks Michelle!!

I live in East Islip, born and raised. Bought a house here with DH.

I love it because it has good schools, a nice town, lots of restaurants nearby, in between Bay Shore, Islip, Sayville, decent size property, a nice community feelings, and a lot of resources.

On the negative it also has Islip Town tax... ridiculous. And since there are not a lot of businesses in our town the school taxes are worse then other districts.

I personally like Suffolk because its less built up then Nassau, but it really depends on where your working. If your going to be commuting to NYC then Nassau might be the way to go, or Babylon.

We are thinking of moving off LI. Mainly because DH's job is in CT but also because taxes on LI really are the worst. When we hear what his co-workers pay for property twice the size of ours, or think about his parents taxes on three acres. It kills us.

But if your between here and CA, your not going to get much different there.

Reason's to move to LI - SUMMER!!! the beach, the bay, the boating, the parks... you can't beat summer on LI.

I own in Long Beach/Lido Beach & for obvious reasons (read name) it is so amazing to have a home on the water and right on teh most beautiful beaches around!

Also look into RVC or Oceanside, Such beautiful areas.

We bought in North Bellmore.

My DH is from Queens and I am from Huntington. We wanted something middle ground between both of our parents....and this is.

We also wanted Nassau because we both work in the city and needed a quick commute to NYC...We commute from the Merrick LIRR stop and its 40 mins. Can't complain.

The schools here are great, the neighborhood and neighbors are wonderful. Everything is super close (which was key)--supermarkets, highways, cleaners, train, etc....

Oh and we wanted to live on the north shore, ideally, I wanted to live in Port Washington but the taxes were out of reach. Couldn't swing that and the mortgage. Maybe somewhere down the road, but for now, the south shore has the taxes that we could afford. And by afford, I mean anywhere below double digits...which we still ended up above, but we're low double digit taxes...

I live on City Island in the Bronx now but I grew up in Bayside and I loved it. Personally I like living on this side of the bridge much better. I also really like Westchester but I do not think I will ever get DH to move off this Island.
I never realized how much time I spent in traffic on LI until I moved to the Bronx.

If you are set on Nassau or Suffolk. My opinion is Nassau county but this is coming from a girl who was often teased by friends when I would travel further east then Roosevelt field mall. I like being close to Manhattan.

You should look at many different neighborhoods and find an area that suits you and your DH. Personally I hate the traffic on LI and it is the main reason that I would never consider moving back.

Can I ask you why you're moving back up? I'm just curious because we are looking into having a home built in Charlotte, NC.

DH and I are in the same boat. We are in Orlando and are maybe looking to move back up...I have a question for you...Where are you looking at new construction?
Its so hard to convince DH because everything is new and cheap down here....so I need to find new construction!

Angela... Both DH and I will be finish with college next Spring and the career opportunities in NY for our careers are immense. PLUS (Major PLUS) we have our families in NYC. Right now we live with SS and he is 14. As much as we willl like to stay down here its hard to be away from family. DH will love to stay but I miss my family a lottt!! ATL is a great place for single ppl and there are also good suburbs to live in but it will be difficult to have children here with nobody (family) to watch over them and so forth. Hope this STORY answered your question.

Angela... So you can probably understand me a bit more. The south is very different. In terms of growth both FL and ATL are not soo advance in many aspects. There are great states with many good cities but very different from what New Yorkers are used to.

I have been looking via zillow.com and I see new construction in Suffolk county. Also Orange County has A LOT more newer constructions for the price of the south. We are also considering CT. Its a matter of seeing what we can get for our $$$.. Hope this helps..

Well that makes sense! My sister and her Dh moved to Charlotte three years ago and now have a daughter. We're hoping to make the move next year and my parents will probably follow soon after. So we're actually moving to be with family too! Good luck in your home search!

Re: LI Cities Suggestions.... (HELP!!)

I am very partial to the Central to Western North Shore of Suffolk...but you tend to get very little for your money and the taxes are mad high. It's really rough when you're fortunate enough to grow up in this area, as both DH and I were (me more so, DH was a little closer to the center of the island than the shore), but can't feasibly stay there or start your own family there. But if you are able to, it's a great area, lots of small towns with charm, close to beaches, and major shopping. About an hour to the city and an hour to the east end.

Re: LI Cities Suggestions.... (HELP!!)

We live in East Meadow. I grew up around here and I love it.

We originally were looking to buy something further west since DH commutes into the city everyday but the price of the house we bought was too good to pass up. So, he has to drive to the train station but its not too far.

I love that we are like 15 min from the beach and like 45min-1 hour away from the city. I am very happy with where I live.
