We picked her up today and she is SUPER CUTE!!! But man is she a lap dog. All she wants to do is climb into my lap.
We are sticking with the name Candy.

Aww, she's so cute! Lots of luck with her! I think I went to the vet once a month with my little guy for the first year...they're just like real babies!

My family has had 4 between my house and my grandparents. I would never get another small dog breed. They really are super smart. They are ranked 6th-8th smartest dog breed depending on what list your looking at, the only toy breed in the Top 10. Though sometimes they are to smart for their own good. They can actually learn to open cabinets and get onto counter tops. They use them as service dogs for wheel chairs. She has already figured out how to get out of her exercise pen. But they are extremely loyal and very behaved little dogs.

Ahhh that's so great Michelle!!! We have a 2 year old Shih-Tzu named Abby who is the most amazing thing in the world to us!!! She is SO freaking smart it's amazing! I grew up with black Labs and my dad has been very intense and into training and well-trained dogs. So Mike and I knew we had to train Abby really well or he wouldn't be happy and he wouldn't help out with her lol. (We live blocks from my parents and are all very close). So we ended up fully training Abby (Blue Ribbon Training in Northport!+++++) and she is beyond amazing. Right now she's staying at my parent's full time because my nani is dying and she is a comfort dog for her. She lays with nani and makes her sooo happy. We miss her! She's been gone 2 weeks now! But I see her every day she's only 3 blocks away lol. Here's a pic!

Allegra she is so cute. You must miss her. I don't know how you do that, having your baby elsewhere. I had Candy at my parents last night but Cookie (my family dog) was not to happy about it. I hope we can train her well, if not I know who to call. Actually we had CJ, Jay's parents dog (yellow lab) trained on Long Island. He is the worst dog though because his family didn't keep up his training. CJ only listens to Jay because Jay is the only one who ever enforced it. So far Candy is pretty good about not biting things, and she already nearly slept through the night in her crate. But house training is already proving difficult. Plus all she wants to do is sit in your lap, which is cute, but a bit difficult, even when playing she climbs into your lap while she waits for you to throw the dolly again and she does not like being alone.
How long after you got her did you have her trained? How did you housebreak her?

Re: Look who is now in my home....
Michelle, It would definitely have been verrrrrrry hard for me to leave her at my parents in her first year. I couldn't have done it. But she's fully 2 now, and has a great solid training. And my parents house is very structured and I'm as comfortable as I can be. It's not terrific and I miss her but my nani needs her right now. It's nice to be able to sleep in and not have to get up by a certain hour to walk her too!! Like a mini vacation lol.
As far as the training and housebreaking, we first trained her to go on the wee wee pad. She immediately took to that even at 8 weeks old. She would go on the pad perfectly. It took til about a good 6-7 months old before we started hard core housebreaking her, and it took like, no time. What we would do is as soon as we took her out of the crate in the morning we would go straight for a walk to make peepee. Every time she would come out of the crate she was taken outside to pee. So she basically learned to hold it. Now she comes and tells you when she has to go out! We have to explain that to people who may be watching her! She's not just being cute and jumping up, or coming over to you and saying hello, she has to go out! As far as Blue Ribbon School we took her there after 6 month old I think. I'll have to ask my hubs. That was a GREAT experience for us a family. She had to learn how to heel, come in, lay down, stay, make turns. All in a class of like at least 10 dogs. There was a Great Dane in her class! His SKULL was the size of her whole body! You have to be a very confident dog owner though, because you really see a lot of weakness in people. Some have very bad dogs that a lot of people would be afraid of. Pits, etc. But you have to be strong and not let the other dogs feel your weakness at all. Watch the Dog Whisperer it's the best! You really learn a lot about dog psychology! As far as tricks we were able to teach Abby all regular tricks at home using Mother Hubbard puppy biscuits (little pieces of them). I'm so happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is so exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I am trying to get her to go on the pad. I want to start with pad training too. Its really to cold to start training her to go outside. She shakes like crazy the minute she is out of the house. i have to tuck her in my coat just to take her to my mom's. The breeder had them going on a pad in the exercise pen at her house, but here she won't do it. Of course its hard because honestly she pees about 3 times a day. I thought puppies peed all the time, but not her. She holds it. All the tricks people tell me to get her to go on the pad require her to actually go once in a while.
All in all she is well behaved but she carries on like I am trying to kill her the minute you leave her locked in her exercise pen or a room and leave the room. Forget the crate. I keep trying to go do laundry in the basement and she goes nuts. She has never been alone before, even for a second.
I got her to almost sleep through the night last night so we are moving in the right direction already.
It is very exciting. Thanks for your help and enthusiasm.

Re: Look who is now in my home....
Michelle, The first month is like hell. They never want to be alone, etc. But if you are persistent and don't give in to the crying, you will be able to train her. With the pad if you leave a wee wee pad out in her penned area, she may just go on it. If you happen to be there and you see her go on it, immediately give verbal praise excitedly 'good girl! peepee' and always SAY peepee. Every time say the same thing. She'll get the point, and dogs LOVE to make you happy. She'll see that peepee on the pad makes you very happy.
Did you put her in the crate last night? Every time we put Abby in her crate (whenever we leave the house and at night, or when certain company is here) we say the same command 'let's go to your bed!' and give her a little treat when she goes in (those Mother Hubbard things are great bc they are healthy not fatty oily treats). So she likes going in her crate, she feels safe there, and is completely crate trained. We would put her in the crate and give her a treat and the first few night she would cry, but that was it! She took to the crate very well! Some people even sleep near the crate for the first few nights to comfort them and let them know if's safe there, and that's their bed. The absolute KEY with the crate is to NEVER send them to the crate for punishment, because it sends them mixed signals.
Bring more pictures on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!! I love her!!!! Omg I would be so afraid DH would step on her!! Or I would squash her somehow. She is freaking adorable!

I can't thank you enough for all your advice. I will keep you updated and probably ask you more advice on Sunday. I will try the treats. I did put the crate right by my night stand last night and kept my head where she could see it. I think that is why she was ok in it. I will do that a few more nights then start to move it away. I want her to see her exercise pen and crate as a safe place but she gets so upset when she goes in them, even with a treat. I will be persistent and let you know how its going on Sunday. DH is a softy, so I am almost glad this week he is in CT for work, gives me some time to get her trained.
I am afraid he will step on her, especially with his steel toed work boots. My mom stepped on our first family papillon once, so after that they started putting cat collars with bells on the puppies. It works. I am doing that with her. I had her wear it for a few hours today and will put it on her a little longer tomorrow. By the time DH is home on Thursday she should be good with it on.
I will bring more pics.
