Are there any teachers here that tutor as well as teach? I am looking to try & do some home tutoring (either from mine or going to theirs) & am trying to figure out what I need to do to get started. I want to make up some business cards & put some up in the local supermarkets & possibly pass some out to the local school districts.
I tutored while I was still going for my bachelor's degree. I dont know if times have changed as far as what I need to do in order to tutor. Do I need ins? Do I need to be incorporated? (God forbid they come to my house & slip & fall on the steps or something) - I dont want the parents suing us for house & home.
Also how did you market yourself? What do you think are the most important things to write/list on your business card to attract customers/clients?
TIA for help ladies. I am getting to the end of my rope here w/ very little work coming in for subbing, not being able to get a job in another field b/c I dont have the experience or they are afraid I will leave once I find a teaching job & the bills are just piling up & not going away. It's so disheartening.

Re: Looking for help/advice on tutoring...
I know we sometimes get fliers at school from tutors. It usually lists their certifications or specialty areas like which courses they would tutor. To be honest, I don't often pass them along to my students if I don't know them but we do always hang them up our department office when we get them. I would try making up a flier and sending them out to local schools.

I am a teacher but I do not tutor and your idea of making up business cards sounds great...i would go to school buildings in your district and post your info in the main office and staff room...let the teachers know because we always get questioned by parents if we know a good tutor. Even go to your public library and ask to post there.
My only advice is not to tutor in your home or their homes...go to a public place like the library...it is less distracting and I think safer from a legal end....I hate to sound so cautious but these days you never know.

I think you should offer tutoring in the child's home. That way the parents are there (avoid any strange situations in your home) and they can be monitored. I used to tutor privately and I have worked for a tutoring company in the past. I would list that you are a certified teacher. That's really important. Also, list your services on Craigslist and I would create a list of references that potential clients could contact. Good luck!
