Looking for some advice... long...

Here's some background. DH and I will both be 31 in November. We plan to start TTC sometime between then and May (our 1 yr anniv).
Many of you know I'm a lawyer. I have a potential awesome opportunity to work with a federal judge, with a commitment of 1 1/2 to 2 years, starting in June. If it's 2 years, DH and I will both be 33 1/2 when it's over. I would never consider taking this position with our current TTC plans. So I'm debating whether I'd put the TTC plans on hold until after the position is up. I have a family history of TTC issues. Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! lol.

Oh and it is NOT a pay cut, and my current job would be held for me.

Thoughts?

we can give a ton of opinions... but you really just need to weigh the two and see what you want more...

what is the job with the federal judge going to give you? will it give you any advancement?

it is a VERY prestigious position... good for career... good experience... necessary if i ever wanna become a judge (LOL)...

If it's something that is once in a lifetime, and your career is very important to you, then I'd hold off on TTC for right now.

Buuuuuttttt, for ME, I would never put a job before my TTC plans. But that's because I'm DYING FOR A BABY. But again, that's ME.

Agree with Ang that you need to weigh YOUR options ... YOUR desires ... etc.

sounds like you plan on being a full time working mom.

if you're worried about ttc because of family having problems i would suggest that you and dh get checked out to make sure everything is working

if they say everything is great hold off on the ttc and focus on your career. 2years are going to fly by.

I would take the opportunity with the Federal judge. You said it's an awesome opportunity. When you are done doing that, will it make you more marketable? (I'm assuming it would look really good on your resume). Do you plan on staying at your current law firm? If you currently work long hours and are worried about not having enough family time, will this opportunity help you move to another law firm that would have better work/life benefits? I would think so.

I don't think 33 is old at all so I would not be worried about age. As far as family problems, are ttc problems hereditary? I have no idea but you can get a good opinion from your doc about that.

You're still a baby!!! I'm turning 42 in two weeks (DH is 43).

No seriously, I just went and got checked out (as did DH). The Dr told us while she wouldn't advise us waiting much longer, we're fine.

Honestly, if the clerkship requires a 1½ - 2 year commitment, you can start TTC in 1½ years.

Me personally, I wouldn't take the job, but that's totally just me....ive Never been a career kinda girl...for me most important thing is family. I want that more than anything...so if i were in your situation i prob wouldn't take it...could also be because I have baby fever like crazy!!

but its prob something you need to talk seriously with DH...and i mean 2 years is not that long to wait..and 33 is still young! but being that your have familly history of issues with ttc...i dunno...

i will have to find out if the TTC problems are genetic. luckily we all go/have gone to the same obgyn.
i also kinda want a baby asap. and as much as i love my career, i'd do anything to be a stay at home mom. maybe have a small practice from home. i'm so conflicted!!!

as to DH... we talked about it and he thinks it's really my decision. he's fine with waiting TTC, gave me pros and cons, and said he'll support me in whatever decision I make. some help he is! LOL!

Question - Can you get family leave during the clerkship after a year since its federal job? This may be an option? Also, that is awesome that your firm is holding your position I know due to the economy many firms are not.

Good luck on your decision. By the way is the clership 2nd Circuit? Or would you have to move?

well if i were you I would probably take the job and it doesn't mean holding off that long. . you could really start trying after a year or a year and get the best of both worlds. . . but if you are really just ready to go TTC then I think that's your decision. Good luck either way!

I'm sure I could get leave but I would just feel terrible about doing that to the judge... i mean you're basically their right hand man.
Yes it's in this circuit so no move necessary. My commute would be a little longer, but i have a 10 min commute as it is lol.

i would take it...and then just have fun and see what happens with the baby making

i wouldnt watch the calendar any more than usual or 'try' extra hard (no pun intended)

but i would def do the career thing first...but not purposely stop the *possibility* of making a baby

leave it up to a higher power

either way - good luck!!! and 2 years is not that long at all!
