Lying...

Lying...

Kinda random, but I was having a discussion with someone about lying...and about if it's okay or not...I was curious what your views were, and if I was in the minority...

Personally, I don't think it's right...EVER...When people say that it's okay to lie to 'protect' someone, I tend to disagree. I get what they are saying, but my argument is, if you have to protect someone from something, then obviously something was done wrong, or isn't right in the first place...

Kind of a vent...but, I just wanted to see what other people thought...

Edited because I can't type this morning

Re: Lying...

I don't condone it at all! It's in my top 3 list of things you NEVER do to me. #1 is lying.

I never used to lie when I was younger, then I became friends with my brothers ex-girlfriend. I wound up buying plane tickets for her on my mom credit card, and tried to hide the bills and eventually got caught, and my mom actually was so mad she called the cops on me.
Ever since then, I just don't like to lie. I am as straight forward with people as I can be. If I feel I have to lie to someone to 'protect' them, then I don't say anything at all.

I also am very bad at remembering my 'stories/lies' so I find it easier to just tell the truth lol This way I wont get things mixed up and I can at least back up my own story b/c I know what I said was true!

well, i'd be lying if i said i've never lied before

IMO, i think it all depends on the situation.... i never EVER EVER lie to DH - i dont have a reason to!

when i was a teenager my middle name was lying to my mom... mostly b/c she was VERY overproctive

I am not sure what you mean when you say 'lying to protect someone'

but, yes, lying is wrong, but there are certain instances when you have to do bad to do good.

Haha...I know everyone has / does...I just don't love it...Also, I feel like age does has something to do with it...I'm sure when we were younger we all did it a ton...seemed harmless then, and of course, as teenagers we only thought about ourselves...

As for the situation that brought it up, not lying was JUST as harmless...so I didn't / don't see the point in lying...it's just ridiculous...and someone can lie about such silly little things, how do you know they won't lie about huge things???

I guess I also have issues with when people lie about bigger things...I know some secrets from friends that are huge...if the truth about some things came out, other friendships / relationships / whatever (all having absolutely nothing to do with me) would be ruined forever. No doubt about that. But, in my opinion, if you did something that big of a deal that is THAT wrong, you don't deserve to get away with just having the guilt...Sure, you can tell yourself that you live with the guilt everyday, but honestly, I don't think that's enough. Pay the price for what you did...If you did something that could really hurt someone you 'supposedly' care about, you don't deserve to have that person as a friend...

i would never lie about something 'big'... like something that is life altering

but i have lied to get out of doing certain things.. like if i really dont feel like going out someplace, i'll just say that i have other plans or i dont feel good even if thats not the truth

yea nobody likes to upset someone- but if its something like my friend's boyfriend is cheating & I know about it- I am saying something. If its something like my sister asks if she looks like she gained weight- my answer is no, but if you think you did, why dont you come to the gym with me.

Yes, lying should never be done, but I think it depends on the lie and who your telling it too. IE when you call out of work sick and you're really not sick.

Completely agree with you...I think that it's just that the situation that brought it up was SO dumb, and that not lying or lying would do the same amount of damage, it just really irked me...

It really depends on the reason and circumstance. I do not lie to DH or family if I can help it.. unless it is a surprise thing or something like it.

Agreed...as I mentioned before, it was something so small that irked me...but now it's stirred up other feelings of annoyance that I had tried to forget about...
