Man awarded $240,000 for having to cover shirt in airport

What do you think of this story?? Do you think it was fair of the airport officials to make him cover his shirt???

-----------------

NEW YORK (AFP) – An airline passenger forced to cover his T-shirt because it displayed Arabic script has been awarded 240,000 dollars in compensation, campaigners said Monday.

Raed Jarrar received the pay out on Friday from two US Transportation Security Authority officials and from JetBlue Airways following the August 2006 incident at New York's JFK Airport, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced.

'The outcome of this case is a victory for free speech and a blow to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling,' said Aden Fine, a lawyer with ACLU.

Jarrar, a US resident, was apprehended as he waited to board a JetBlue flight from New York to Oakland, California, and told to remove his shirt, which had written on it in Arabic: 'We will not be silent.'

He was told other passengers felt uncomfortable because an Arabic-inscribed T-shirt in an airport was like 'wearing a T-shirt at a bank stating, I am a robber,'' the ACLU said.

Jarrar eventually agreed to cover his shirt with another provided by JetBlue. He was allowed aboard but his seat was changed from the front to the back of the aircraft.

Last week, nine Muslims, including three children, were ordered off a domestic US flight after passengers heard what they believed were suspicious remarks about security.

Although the passengers, eight of them US citizens, were cleared by the FBI, they were reportedly still barred from the AirTran flight.

Security has been at a high level in US airports since the September 11, 2001 hijacked airliner attacks against the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

However, rights groups and representatives of the Muslim community say the security measures have led to frequent discrimination and harassment.

That is odd. I think that it is wrong to have asked him to cover that up.

Let me start by saying I lost my uncle on 9-11-01 and a lot of my friends lost people that they love. Not to mention I was there in the towers at the time of the first plane's crash.

Honestly IMHO I think it was insane to have him cover his t-shirt. We are very reactive and overly so with some things i.e. having to take our shoes off ONLY after the shoe bomber.

I think we can't get past racial profiling as wrong as it is at its core. Ive been on places with with fret guys wearing very suggestive and overly explicit tees and they werent asked to 'cover up' or to change regardless of the countless complaints lodged. So it wasn't about the shirt (how many people can read Arabic) it was that it was written in Arabic and he was Arabic.

Good for him. If it had been hebrew script or another language would he have had to cover it up?

And that whole mess with the muslim family last week was ridiculous. The other passengers on that plane should be ashamed of themselves

it's sad that because of race & religion people are denied from flying on aircrafts (the 9 Muslims) and that a saying on a man's shirt caused such an uproar at the airport!

what about shirts that have obscene or vulgar statements on them, or objectify women? (we've all seen those types of shirts) it's freedom that allows us to be so open with our views and opinions.

You KNOW that tons of people are going to wear shirts that they think they may get stopped for now... It's like the McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit.. um, duh.. yes coffee is hot. People want money for everything these days.

BTW, I agree that the guy in the airport should not have been asked to cover his shirt.
