Marriage and Money

DH and I are looking at income vs. expenses and coming up with our plan.

This is not fun, I am a free spender and believe me I spend it all and he keeps asking over and over where my money goes and I am going to kill him!!

I don't know where it goes just come up with a plan and I'll stick to it. Just stop asking me where my money went.

Re: Marriage and Money

Thats the reason why we are keeping our own checking/savings accounts in addition to the joint one. A certain percentage of each paycheck goes into the joint and the rest we keep in our own accounts. So if I feel like going on a shopping spree I can Thats another reason why I work a second job.

Re: Marriage and Money

I like to shop, but since getting married, we have to keep a tight handle on things, and the only thing we spend money on is food, bills, and the WWE pay per views we get every ther month. We don't even eat out anymore.....and it's great for us. We are saving for a house and a baby, so it's worth it to us.

That's how we have been doing it while living it together but we want to pay off our 2 student loans and my car this year so that we have no debt except the mortgage.

I know it will be worth it when we are debt free but being on a budget is going to take some getting used to.

I am hoping that won't be a problem. We will still have our own personal account to spend out of but I am going to only get a budgeted amount of money to spend freely. That's what we are working on figuring out.

Re: Marriage and Money

This is by far. the HARDEST part of marriage. Dh and I have had some really nasty fights.

I think it comes down to determining what your financial goals are and what his financial goals are and how you can make them both of your goals. It takes compromise, compromise, compromise.

We are still in progress, but I haven't killed him yet

Re: Marriage and Money

Time and Patience? I agree that this is definitely the hardest part of marriage. DH and I have been living together for a while and joint checking has been the one thing that we still have not combined. It is the cause of silly arguments between us.

We are finally going to take care of this and what has helped is we are making an effort to talk more openly about finances; what really bothers us about how we each spend money and what are long term goals are. I think that has helped a lot. We are both accountable to each other.

Good luck.

Re: Marriage and Money

DH and me have a join checking account but, as of this weekend, we are getting separate accounts, it's too much fighting for every single penny we spend, it's never enough!
SO, we are going to do it and we are splitting the bills as well, see how it works out.

Re: Marriage and Money

We each have our own accounts then a joint account for the house, bills, savings, etc. Every paycheck we put in an agreed amount - this way we both have the freedom to spend what we want on little things.
