Married before wedding?

Married before wedding?

09-er crashing -- I remember seeing a topic posted, I think on this board, about brides who got married civilly before they had the ceremony and the reception. I can't find it when I search. Can someone perhaps bump it or FM me the link?

Thanks!

Edited for spelling.

Re: Married before wedding?

I got married in Vegas on April 12, we were with 10 friends, it was a blast!
We had our LI wedding/jewish ceremony on July 26, and a reception in SF last Saturday.

The good part, is it was really nice to have an intimate ceremony without family drama or worrying about looking perfect.

The bad side is people did not take our LI wedding totally seriously, nobody from my mom's side came at all. It's also really hard to get excited about wedding stuff once you are married. It's a odd stretch of time when you are a married bride to be! (I felt like people on the board might think I was a 'fake bride')

All in all....if you have an important reason to do it, it will be fine, most people will understand and be supportive. We had impossible family logistics to deal with, and did not want to slight anyone. Some folks have immigration or health insurance issues. I think it's pretty common in some countries to have civil and religious ceremonies. However if I had it all to do again, I might just want one wedding.

Re: Married before wedding?

Thank you all (and I did get the FM's, but work today has been hectic so it might be a few days until I respond to anyone, thanks Lehman!) -- we are considering it for a variety of reasons, FH's parents actually are supportive and I haven't brought it up with my parents yet. We decided to talk to the rabbi marrying us and get his take. This is obviously a tough decision to make, because we have real reasons for considering it (and if we got married on december 31st our wedding date is only 6 weeks later) but we don't want to somehow feel like we are lessening the actual wedding day.
