My oral surgeon wants me to get a CT scan on a tooth with a bad infection in it. I scheduled the CT & was told that it needed to be authorized...

Flash forward to today - I wanted to get the authorization done for myself, called the insurance company and...

THEY WONT COVER THE CT SCAN BECAUSE ITS FOR A DENTAL PROCEDURE and my insurance doesnt cover dental procedures!!!

Tell me how ridiculous is this - it's an infection, one that could potentially cause problems to other parts of my body and they dont authorize a CT because its dental related.

u have to have the dentist call and speak to someone in the authorization dept. Even if you dont have dental coverage, a ct scan should be covered. Make sure your dentist calls, but let him/her know that they tried to deny authorization because it is considered dental. If anything, have your primary get it authorized as well. And keep trying to appeal it if theydeny it.

If all else fails... go to healthplex.com and get coverage for dental. they are excellent and your dental expenses will be WAYYY less than what you would be paying out of pocket.

I do have dental, but it's thru DH's union...so its sorta separate from regular medical. its weird & im still trying to get used to it.

I had a similar issue not too long ago. Medical Insurance does not cover anythng Dental related thats why my job has both dental & medical coverage. Meanwhile when I needed a CT scan for my oral surgeon neither insurance company would pay for it so I had to pay out of pocket.

ugh dont get me started with insurance!! espeically dental insurance!! nothing is covered soo what the f is the point!!!!!

DH has major dental problems! he needs a impant because the bridge wont hold, and insurance doesnt cover that cuz its concidered cosmetic!!! gonna cost us a fortune!!

You cannot authorize any radiology scan yourself, it needs to be done by the MD office always, no matter what the reason.

If your dentist calls he should be able to get it authorized no problem.
