MIL issues ( long )

MIL issues ( long )

DH and i are moving out in 2 weeks, to a house, but right now we live with DH's parents for a lil bit, [theyre house is very big and accomadating] so i do get my space, and its a matter of a few weeks so i can TOLERATE it or try too.

I sleep late, because im up doing laundry, homework (in law school/ full time student). And when I have free time we go out to eat, etc etc.

______here comes the issue___

We both lived w/ our parents before we got married. DH mom is stay at home, never worked, but never really COOKED either for her children. The 2 years we were engaged I remember he would always say theres never anything at home to eat, and would always be grabbing a pizza or burger. And I always used to say how unhealthy that is….

So now that im living with my inlaws for a bit, and I have to SHARE the kitchen, and everytime I wana make something she meddles in, asks me what im doing, or expects me to cook for the whole family…I simply don’t cook. I have made a few dishes here n there..but not on a constant basis. We usually make quick fixes, like sandwiches, go out to eat, order in. It wont be like this forever. Im waiting to move out I guess..

Yesterday my MIL asks me in a stern tone.. “So when do you plan to cook for your husband?” Im 53 years old, tired, but I still stay in the kitchen for hours and cook for my husband, My daughter [my sis in law] was taking the Pharmacy state exam, worked, and still cooked for her husband. Why don’t you make something? You HAVE to cook everyday for him!

Me: Standing there SHOCKED, im just like okay, but he honestly loves to eat. He’s been eating out since ive known him. He’s never even really had home cooked meals, so its not like he got married, and stopped getting food.

( He is NOT a big eater, at all) ... a simple soup fills him...

And she totally ignored that statement, and was like so what if he likes to eat, it gets expensive, you have to start cooking, and trying….

And than I was just SILENT, and went upstairs to our room…and told DH what she said. And he was just like “Oh don’t mind my mom, shes just giving her 2 cents” “let it be” ….

She is SOO annoying..!!! I cant wait to move out…

Oh man..MIL's are such pains in azzes sometimes! I'd just ignore it...especially if you are moving soon. If she says anything else just smile, nod and say you'll take that into consideration

You cook the same way my mom does and it works for my parents. Mom does quick fixes or orders take out. there is nothing wrong with that. Don't let her make you feel bad for not having a home cooked meal ont he table at 5 everyday for your husband.
Just tell her when you make a real meal you use every dish, pot and pan in the house. And that you are sparing her kitchen the mess. If she continues to harrass you then cook a meal and use every pot, pan and spoon and then leave everything to 'soak' for a couple days so it is easier to clean If you need an extensice recipe let me know. I can give you one that will leave a bigger mess then a 2 year old in a mud puddle.

That's funny--she's never really cooked but she acts like she does? If she brings it up again, tell her the truth, whatever that might be. Have you guys worked out yet how you're going to handle chores like cooking? If you have time, it's not a bad idea to discuss who's going to be responsible for what before you move into your own place. Still, I assume that since you're in law school, you're not planning on having a three-course home-cooked meal ready for your husband every day. So tell her that. Point out that your husband is a capable person and he will be cooking also. And then go into another room and laugh while she has apoplexy. Even if he can't boil water, it would be amusing to see her reaction.
