MIL question

MIL question

So it turns out that MIL has to go to a urologist today and figure out if she does in fact have kidney stones.

I helped DH get her car from her job yesterday and when we dropped it off, we went it.

MIL was heavily doped up and I said hello and asked her how she was and she said she was doing well. Then she started talking to me in Polish (I don't think she knew she was doing it)

Here is my question: I would like to be a good DIL and call her, but I don't want to call her if she is on heavy meds and will speak to me in a foreign language again.

Do I make DH call her and see what state she is in and then call her? I don't want her to be offended if I don't know how to respond to her Polish questions.

That's a good question. If it were me I would try to call her. If she starts responding in Polish, I would try to get off the call.

You could try to send her someting too.

If she's so heavily medicated that she doesn't realize what language she's speaking, I really doubt that she'll be able to remember the conversation afterwards.

You can also gently say, 'I don't speak Polish, MIL. Can you say what you're trying to tell me in English?'

She may not even remember the conversation later.

I say call her...if she starts going off in Polish again, hand her off to DH. If she doesn't realize she's doing it because of the meds, chances are she won't really remember any of it anyway.

And make sure you say MIL instead of her name too! She won't understand LIW-speak anymore than you'll understand thePolish!
