Mini dilemna-need advice on this

Mini dilemna-need advice on this

Ok I have a mini dilemna I need opinions on...

I purchased something from an EBay seller. They listed the item price and the shipping. I think ok not bad so I bid. I won the item. So I get an email from the shipper telling me that she has sent the item (YAY!) but that she never went to the post office beforehand to find out how much it would be, so turned out to be 5 bucks more than she anticipated. She wants to know if I can send her the extra 5 bucks even though she cannot 'hold me to it.'

Now I feel torn. Yes it is 'only' five bucks, but it is a 5 bucks that would have made me decide NOT to buy that particular item because there were similar items liisted that would have been less had I known from getgo she intended to charge me 5 bucks more.

So I feel bad for her but honestly, if you are a seller on ebay you know the drill; you go to the post office BEFORE to know EXACTLY how much you are going to charge or you write 'shipping to be decided' so the buyer knows what they are getting into.

I guess what bugs me the most is she could have emailed me BEFORE she shipped it; like said 'Hey Im sorry but shipping turned out to be more than I said and it would be whatever. Are you still interested in the item or do you want to cancel the transaction?' I could have had a real choice then. But now its sorta like Im being backed in the corner by the idea that I 'should be the nice one' when its not MY fault.

So my question is should I send the 5 bucks even though she was a bit A) lazy with finding out the shipping costs and B) Has put me in an awkward spot. Or should she be the one to use this as a learning experience?

maybe i'm a b*tch but i'd say eff her---no add'l money should be sent

its her job to be diligent about finding out about pricing and costs. you're right--she should've messaged you before she sent the item out.

i would respond to her and let her know that you would NOT have purchased the item if you knew it would cost $5 more--and the price you bid on it was what you expect to pay. let her know that while it might sound harsh, but you don't think you should pay extra, even if it is $5, because she didn't do the right research.

when the item arrives---leave her the appropriate feedback and make sure not to do business with them again.

for all you know -- she might make a habit of 'forgetting' to tell people the shipping price.

actually, it was me that sold it to you and i would like my $5 please.
i agree with MJ on this one. u cant just ask for an additional $5 after the auction is closed. i think she needs to read the ebay handbook.

Yea Mel..I agree with the last part totally..I didn't want to say that because I didn't wnat to sound like a b*tch but come on... I just felt it was sneaky-like she is pulling on my heart strings and you guys know I may be a PITA at times but I don't do guilt well. Had she told me beforehand I could have told ehr to just refund me and she keeps the item and no one looses anything. But to do it after the fact is kinda just bleh.

Thanks guys!

no way!!! DH sells a lot of stuff on ebay, and he knows from other sellers as well that they usually over state their shipping charges just to make more $$. if he's shipping a big package to another country, he will go to the post office before he ships it to find out the cost, so if he it's more $$ than he posted, he just ***** it up. you win some, you lose some. you should not have to send her anything.

no way!!! she's a good scam artist and probally does this all the time, and makes it seem like its no big deal, just so she can list it for a slightly cheaper price, or the shipping lower so everyone will buy from her

I agree with everyone. You should not have to fork over $5 for her mistake. You are supposed to go to the shipping establishment to see what it would cost and not guess at it. Is she new at this or what?

Sorry, no extra $5 for her. Honestly, you bought the item because of the total price listed - had it been $5 extra, you wouldn't have bought it, so why would you send her $5 now? It will also teach her to find out the right shipping costs ahead of time - a good lesson to learn if she wants to keep selling on Ebay.

I agree totally with everyone else!!! No $5 for her!!! You wouldn't have bid on the item had you known it was going to cost that much more... like you said there were other ones cheaper. Don't feel bad... she probably does it to a lot of people!!!

simple answer - nope.

teach her a lesson. you're not obligated to and she should've done her due diligence (cool points for using a law firm word ) before posting about the item.

tough noogies ebay seller!

I'd be annoyed. technically, you are only responsible for the price on the auction. That's IT. Anything over what you bid plus the stated shipping is not your problem.

She messed up & you should not have to pay more. For starters, you can EASILY calculate shipping on usps.com. She could have done that earlier.

Also - She has to pay eBay a percentage of her sale. By selling it to you & then raising the price, after the 'official' sale, she's screwing eBay out of their commission on that $5.

I totally agree with what you said above ... she should have given you the option of backing out of the purchase if you didn't want to spend the extra $5.

I sell occasionally on eBay and ship via UPS. eBay gives the seller the option of just putting in the weight of the package, and it will do the UPS calculation for you based on how far the item is being shipped, etc.

I don't think I would send her the extra money .... and I would send her an email telling her what you told us (you wouldn't have bid on it if it were $5 more, and you would have backed out of the sale if she had contacted you with the increased shipping cost) ... but I don't think I would do the double whammy of also giving her negative feedback ... Maybe a neutral?

Another option, if you really really feel bad ... what if you were to offer to split the additional shipping cost with her ... and send her $2.50?!

I agree. I felt bad cause I got the package and she included a note telling me to enjoy the item in good help and to have a great day. So yea I really feel sorta guilty but I keep telling myself what you guys are-if I send her the money I get screwed for a mistake that was hers and that COULD have been avoided simply by letting me know ahead of time and we could have cancelled the transaction. So I am sending her a thank you note back for the item (Im a wuss I know) and then giving positive feedback because the item IS as expected and all but Ebay has that option now where you ccan pick it apart like were shipping rates unreasonable. If you say no or neutralm you get a section to explain to EBAY why but the seller doesnt see it. So thats what I will do.

Thanks for the support girls!!

I totally agree with you. I don't think you should have to pay anything extra that, it is her fault. It doesn't matter how much extra it is, it is her fault.

LOVVVVVVVVVE to c this persons user name!

I am a seller on ebay and have been for some years, this person is either a total amateur seller or just a scam artist. Like I said I would love to c her user name!

Don't feel obligated to send the extra money , forget it. Move on..

I don't think you should send her the money. You won the bid for a specific amount and that's all you have to pay.
