moving at work-need advice

moving at work-need advice

good grief.

so our department is being redone completely...
Demo is supposed to begin in 2 weeks in our wing. We're supposed to move next week into another lab that a different group just moved out of.... originally it looked like a bomb went off... garbage everywhere. They just cleaned it up today, so we could see the cabinets and infrastructure....

In the corner, I saw a hot water pipe where the insulation was smashed and crumbs and dust were everywhere.... ASBESTOS I'm 99.9% sure...

I don't want to move in there. I'm trained in pathology, and know exactly what mesothelioma lungs look like.... Now, I'm a 'team player' and all, but not to the point that I'll sacrifice my health.... how should I deal with it? Me making a stink will hold up the entire departmental renovations, and the arrival of a new departmental chair. Major negative vibes.... what's the most democratic way to politely say 'no way am I breathing asbestos for a year'?

oh, I should add I don't think the dept knows about the broken pipe insulation. They MAY be fine with the delay, but obviously, due to the political climate and huge delays, they'll still be very upset.
(can't believe the prior group didn't see this, unless the damage is new)

I would just speak up about it. Making a stink by causing a scene and politely bringing your concern to a mangers attention are two different things. Ask to speak to the head of the department privately and say you noticed the smashed insulation by the water pipe and you are concerned for your health and the health of the rest of your team members.

My Mom has a little plaque in the house it reads 'Irish diplomacy: the ability to tell a man to go to hell so that he look forward to making the trip.' Make the department head look forward to fixing the crack pipe (haha crack pipe )

I agree, just bring it up privately and not 'go nuts' about it. Just say that you are worried about everyones health and the time spent in there.
