I used to have long straight fine hair...whenever i ended up at a social event there had to be someone who would come up to me and say 'ur hair looks great' 'did you straighten it?' and id say nope its pin straight, right out of the shower... it was shiny, soft, blah blah
SO 6 months ago i got highlights because i felt i was the only person who never did anything to their hair, i wanted a change sorta speak. My hair is now COARSE, split ends, knots, limp, i dont know. its awful...what do i do??

Re: my hair has turned in to crap
get a good conditioner and leave it on your hair wrapped in a towel for about 20 minutes.... When I used to have highlights, this is what I would have to do or else it would look like straw

there will always be a slight difference, especially if u had NEVER put ANYTHING in ur hair...i will say, outsiders probably dont realize it..u just know it because it's you. have u been using products for color-treated hair?? shampoo/conditioner and ANY other products(mousse/gel/even hairspray,etc)..makes a big BIG difference!

yes you definitely have to use color-treated hair products.
also, just a thought but... i felt the same when i got highlights. did you suggest they color over it with semi-permanent color? for whatever reason, when i get my hair colored it feels SO good - really soft and healthy. the stuff they use now is much better.
i just got a few highlights and she highlighted my hair and colored over it... i was worried about it drying out but it still feels great. so maybe go to your salon and tell them to do something like this.
otherwise, just wait until it grows out.

Re: my hair has turned in to crap
I got a bad perm many yeaers ago and my cousins got my hair shiny and soft oagain with home rememdy type treatments.
Once a week they would use egg yolks and olive oil mixed together and put it all over my hair and cover it for like 30 min. Then I would rinse and wash and it really made a difference.
They also took an avocado that was over-ripe but not spoiled mashed it wit a little olive oil and followed the same as the egg yolk treatment. In the 2 months I was with them my hair was the shiniest I've ever seen it.
I have to start doing it again. I've noticed that the older i've gotten and the more hair treatments I do the more dull my hair has been getting.

I never had anything done to my hair (virgin hair here), but I've noticed change in my hair as well. It use to be so shiny and now its sort of dull.. They say your hair goes through changes in life as you age.
I actually tried this conditioner by Pantene which is amazing, and its cheap. It comes in a tub, leave it on for like 2 or 3 mins and rinse, it really helped my hair a lot

I really recommend the Redken Extreme line. I use Redken Extreme Force and the conditioner from the Smooth Down collection. My hair is so dry and coarse after highlights.

Also, after you blow dry, I swear by AFTER PARTY by Bedhead. It really tames and adds so much shine to your hair. I love it, it will turn your hair into silk.

Make sure you always use some sort of protector before drying or flat ironing your hair. Go get a trim and also get a deep conditioning treatment. Switch your shampoo and conditioner as well. Maybe try something thats extra moisturizing. When my hair gets coarse I always use KMS Moisturepair shampoo and conditioner (the blue top bottle). I also use the matching leave in conditioner from KMS. I also like Kerastase Bain Satin. They have an excellent bain satin conditioner that works great as a hair mask. Its not cheap though!

Oh! I thought of one more thing. If you go to a salon that uses Goldwell products, ask for them to do the Elumen process in your hair. Its usually a little bit extra on top of color, or you can pay just for the treatment. But it basically retexturizes your hair and makes it really soft and shiny and it keeps the color longer and protects it from fading. My salon charges like $30 extra for this treatment.
