I got my marriage license literally five days after our wedding. Great. (enter sarcasm)
I'm really happy about being married, I just have a hard time letting go of my name. Now that I have moved to a different state, I can't let it 'hang'...I have to do it sooner rather than later.
So...... what's the deal? Can I got to SS and have my maiden be a second middle. I know DMV won't let you do it - that's fine. But can I at least represent on my SS my maiden name?
There should be a law that boys have to do these things too after they are married. They don't even change from their Mr.!!! Another reason we needed a 'founding mother' instead of all 'founding fathers'!!! (vent over)

Re: My turn to ask newlyweds....
Not really sure about the middle name thing through SS. I changed everything! BUT I did want to first welcome you to NJ and second, I don't know where in Jersey you are, but I know of a really FAST (yes, FAST) DMV.
I would also advise that when you do go to SS, to not go to the one in the Orange or East Orange -

Re: My turn to ask newlyweds....
Thanks for the kind words!!! Jersey is a very nice place and I know I'll grow to like it.
Ok...ladies, I've been doing some investigations. Here is some info from the SSA.
6. Change of Middle Name to Maiden Name on SSN Card Lisa Smith Jones applies for a replacement SSN card in that name because she lost her SSN card. The prior Numident records show the names Lisa Marie Smith and Lisa Jones. She submits a driver’s license showing her name as Lisa S. Jones.
It is a common occurrence in the U.S. for a woman to take her maiden name as the middle name after marriage. Because a legal name generally consists of a first or given name and a surname or family name, whether the identity document submitted shows the middle name is included, omitted or incorrect does not matter.
SSA can process the change of Lisa’s middle name. This is not a legal name change because the first and last names have not changed.
NOTE: In cases where there are questions about whether the applicant is the number holder, it may be necessary to request additional evidence of identity and the have the applicant explain middle name changes.

Re: My turn to ask newlyweds....
Some more explaining that:
2. Legal Name Generally, a person’s legal name is the name on his/her birth certificate unless it has been changed after birth by a legal action, such as marriage or by a court order.
For official purposes, a legal name generally consists of a first (or given name) and a surname (or family name) that must be used to sign legal documents, deeds, or contracts. A middle name (or names) may be included as part of the legal name but whether the middle name is included, omitted or incorrect does not matter.
A legal document showing a name change or the basis of the name change (divorce, marriage, naturalization) must be submitted when the applicant requests an SSN card in a new name.
By law, SSA must verify certain information on the Numident record (e.g., SSN name and date of birth data) for States before the driver’s license can be issued. Also, for homeland security purposes the Numident and other SSA records should show the NH's legal name. Therefore, SSA records must show the NH’s legal name to comply with State matching agreements and other requirements.
See the examples in RM 00203.210E. for when a Numident is changed to correct a name but it is not considered a legal name change situation.

Re: My turn to ask newlyweds....
i'm not sure if this is going to help but...my husband took my last name on the marriage license and went to SS to change his name to mine. he then started having problems with medical insurance for his children because he was known as mr. jones and not mr. smith like the kids so....he called town hall and they told him that he can do whatever he wants with his name ie: make it hypenated, change it back to his original or make it his middle name. he was born with one and married into another. so i think you can do what you want. just tell them what you want at social security.

Thanks. That does help. From what I have learned, your middle names do not count, in a way... The stuff from the SSA says that only your first and surnames are the issues. My intention is to take on my maiden name as a middle (which it says you can do) and take my husband's last name. But on everything else, you can have what you want on there.

That's what I did, I was Rachel Middle Maiden (RCC) and now I'm Rachel Middle MaidenMiddle Last (RCCG). My Driver's license says Rachel C. G(last name).

thanks. i think that's what I'd like to do. the only thing that bothers me is that i've liked having the 'M' for my middle there, and I'd be changing that on the license...
