For those who changed their names with Social Security already: Did you mail in your original proofs- marriage and birth certificate? Or did you go there in person? Which is easier? And if you mailed it it, do you send certified mail with an return address?

I went there in person and it was really easy, took like 20 min of waiting and like 5 min once I was at the counter. They mail you the new card within 2 weeks.

I went on a week day. Took an early lunch around 11:00 I was in and out. You need the original marriage License and that's it. Didn't ask for driver's license or passport she said the Marriage license was enough. I was in and out within 1/2 hour.

If you mail in your documents they have to be ORIGINAL. You CAN mail them ceritified but it really doesnt mean anything in this case since you are mailing something to the government. . . it wont really make a difference - if they lose it, they lose it.
I usually dont even tell people about this option, I just tell them to go in.
Also I was in the Jamaica office about 5PM and we didnt even have to wait on line we went right to the window. I tried to be all slick and use my employee id and the guard laughed at me bc there was no line to cut

Re: Name change at SS
I keep putting it off because I can't get there on lunch or during the day w/o taking time off. I think I am going to try and go fri, I took 1/2 day to take the kids out trick or treating. They get out like 2:50 pm. I hope it won't take long in there around lunch time though. DH tried going once for me but I needed to sign the form with the new name. You can print the form out online and have it filled out and ready when you get there to make it quicker. DH said he was in and out pretty quickly.
