Name change headache

Name change headache

I'm still confused about this.
Since the marriage certificate says ' new surname: Dh's last name' I have no option but to change it, right?

Now, If I do change it: How can I keep my maiden name for work purposes?? I work at an investment bank and want to keep my email, phone, name in directory the way it is. But want to change my W-4 and benefits only....
Can this be done????

I don't think you HAVE to change it. It's my understanding that you can continue using your maiden name indefinitely or you can go through the process of formalizing the name change (i.e., DMV, Social Security).

I changed mine, but am continuing to work under my maiden name (at least for now). My professional license is in my maiden name and the licensing board told me that I could do this.

I have not yet gone through the process of changing my W-2s, but I guess I should get on that!

I think that if I change my w-2, my last name will change in the global directory at work.

From my understanding, you never truly lose your maiden name... you can continue to use it regardless of what you changed it on...

From what I understand if you change it you have to change it everywhere...it can cause a lot of confusion with social security.

This is too confusing. Would the SS office let me know if I have to change it or not?

your legal name is now your husbands name. You can talk to your HR dept about not having your name changed on the company roster but your W-4s I think will have to be in the new name cause that is your legal name......I could be wrong.

I had to change my name with work because I'm an atty. but your company may not require you to change it all.....if you have any sort of professional license though it will probably have to be changed.

They will not contact you. Although if you changed your name on the marriage licence and do not plan to change it on you social security card etc. you may have a problem with having your earnings reported to social security. It happen to a woman I work with...she had to finally take care of it and it was a PITA.

You'll have to talk to the IT department about your email and the directory. IT's the one who updates email addresses and they do it from the company directory they are given. If you let them know you want to keep your maiden name on there, it will stay there. Plus you can ask them who gives them their info.

As far as your legal name, a marriage certificate is a legal document. That document states that your name is now legally changed. You will need to change your ID, SS card, W4s, etc. If you don't want to change your name you will need to go through the courts to have it changed back to your maiden name.
