Name change help

Name change help

yea yea I know...there are 30 million of this thread, but Im too lazy to search.

Do I have to go to SS first? and if so how do I change my name on my license if they dont actually give you your new SS card right then and there?

AND can I go to the DMV first? Being that I have my marriage license shouldnt that be enough proof of my name change?

You can go to DMV first.... they only want your marriage certificate to look at. remember to bring your title (if you own your car)... i forgot i needed to change my name on that, i had to go twice!

S.S. office just looks at your marriage certificate as well. i think they also looked at my passport and license. doesn't matter if those are in your maiden name because you have the license to show.

Thanks! I wasnt sure the order of things-will the DMV take my marriage license or do they just look at it? If they take it I am going to have to get another copy I forgot to get copies when I went

I went to SS first and then to the DMV weeks later - the DMV does not need your SS card, just your marriage license

Both the DMV and SS just looked at my marriage licence - they didn't take it. I did DMV first, then SS, but I was dealing with the CT DMV - not sure if NY is different.

All I needed to change my name with the DMV was my marriage cert. Just make sur you also change the title and reg on your car too.
SS only needed my Marriage cert. too. Which reminds me 5 days was about 2 weeks ago I have to find mine

They just look at it.

I've only had to send my original for my passport, everything else they just want to look at it, want a photocopy (frequent flier accounts/hotel accounts) or trust you (credit cards).
